Front Brake Rotor And Pad Replacement

Recommended Posts

Time to change my front brakes...

There seems to be some confusion on what pads are compatible with Stabilitrak.

1. I am looking for a higher quality rotor than the original equipment, but am not interested in slotted, drilled or dimpled. Any ideas? Napa Ultra Premium?

2. I am looking for a high quality brake pad, but I don't want pads that require a lap or two around the track to warm up. The Hawk LTS look nice, but I am not sure if they are compatible with Stabilitrak. Tirerack.com say they are not, but most other website do not differentiate. Can anyone confirm or deny? Other suggestions?

Thanks!

Well, I ended up calling Hawk to confirm that stabilitrak would not be an issue.

They recommended a slotted-type rotor.

I installed Hawk LTS pads with Power Slot rotors and followed the bedding procedure per Hawk's website (and the packaging). Quickly hit the pads on a flat sheet of sandpaper and hosed the crap out of everything with brake cleaner. Greased the pins with Hawk's supplied lubricant and used a thin film of anti-seize on the clips. I feel like I should have replaced the pad clips, but neglected to purchase them ahead of time. The caliper mounting bracket bolts were seized on there tight due to corrosion. PB Blaster and some heat fixed this.

No noise and the brakes seem to be working much better than the OE. Could probably benefit from a brake bleed.

('08 Silverado 1500, 4x4)

19mm for the caliper pins and caliper mounting bracket bolts.

T30 Torx for the bolt that holds the rotor to the hub (Haynes did not show this - probably a running change?)
