Tailgate On 2010

Alright, I want to take off the tailgate cap and have the new bedliner I am getting sprayed up and over the edge to have it match the side rails.

A few people have told me that there are four holes on the outside of the tailgate and how to overcome those. BUT, the shop that is going to do my bedliner thinks that there might be holes on the very top of the tailgate on the 2010s like some other truck brands.

Does anyone know how hole-y the tailgate on the 2010s actually is? I suppose I could simply take the tailgate cap off and find out, but, I'd rather not waste the money of having to buy a new one if I don't have to.

Thanks!

youll be amazed if you pull that cap off at how many holes are under there... its crazy theres holse all along the top of it, i wouldnt suggest pulling it off unless you're putting another plastic one back on, ive seen people try to linex over the holes (with their tape laid down to try to cover them) it looks like junk, just leave it alone

Ugh... Well, so much for my plan. Seems you are right. It appears on the 2010s that they cut big ol' oblong holes out of the sheet metal in an attempt to "lighten" the tail gate. They then covered the holes up with a cheap piece of soft plastic! On previous trucks, there were four smaller holes for possible screws or alignment that could easily be covered. But, the new ones are way too big to simply cover with tape or plug.

I spoke with one of the parts guys at a local dealer and he gave me the scoop which is exactly what you said. Looks like I'll just be going over the side rails then. So much for trying to have it match!

It's a Swiss cheese style tailgate.

GM saved a grand total of 4 ounces of weight by punching all these holes in the tailgate.
