eventually im going to get a supercharger for my truck, more than likely it will be a magnacharger. but i have a few drivetrain questions, i have a 5.3 6-speed. the 6.2's come with the same tranny dont they? and how about the rear end, is mine the same as a 6.2?? if so, with the super charger, i should only be about 40hp over a stock 6.2, which i would think would be fine, but i wanna hear what you guys think

Yes, same transmission,... but different rear end. The 6.2L comes with the 6L80e trans and 9.5" rear end. The 5.3L comes with the 6L80e trans and 8.5" rear end. Your weak link will be the rear end :uhoh:

And don't expect the factory driveshaft to hold up if you go above 100 either.

I did the magnacharger on my '00 5.3L. Put on 80k miles with the supercharger before selling it. Never had an issue. (That was about 385HP/450ftlbs of torque). Best money every spent!

Keep in mind that you lay into it once in a while, but it's not often that you're driving WOT at high revs (sustained operation).

It was the 4speed though, not sure if that matters (I doubt it, since doesn't the corvette run the same 6 speed auto?)

I am currently looking into supercharging my denali. I was talking to the performance division at my dealer and he was recommending the 2.9l whipple as it has a lot more potential. He did not say much about the driveshaft but he did tell me that the trasmission and the rear end should be pretty solid and hold up to the power really well. What is the concern on the driveshaft? Is there a way to strengthen it?

Your AWD denali will have the 8.5" rear end, but being AWD, that shouldn't be a problem. On a 2wd denali, it gets the 9.5".

the issue with the driveshaft is that centrifugal force basically causes it to come apart at speeds typically around 100 mph.

That number varies depending on the rear axle/ final drive ratio.

It is possible to have the driveshaft "high speed balanced", some get away with it, some just get a custom driveshaft built by a reputable company.

as for the rear end - as long as you aren't abusive it will hold just find. Hard launches, spinning tires, etc. will break it. The weakest of all links is if you have the G80 differential, I've personally seen many meet their demise. It can be replaced/ upgraded if need be.

The 6L80 seems to so far take everything that has been thrown at it, haven't seen anyone with much of a complaint.

I have the 2wd so I knew I had the larger rear end. What would it take to balance the drive shaft. Do you have an idea of what it would cost to have that done and where I would go to get it done. Thanks

a 2wd is even more critical because it's longer (on a 4wd the transfer case takes up some room making the driveshaft shorter)

I'm not sure about the price, it can be anywhere from $50 to $200. Check the link below:

I'd say do it. If something comes apart it can be replaced. I don't think these things are as fragile as some posts are suggesting. But I could be wrong.
