Update On The Rust

Brought my truck in today to show them all the rust that was started forming on the truck. Th guy in the body shop had no problem replacing the front bumper running boards, but when it came to the 20'' chrome rims, he took some pictures and said they had to be sent off somewhere and really didn't give me an answer on them one way or the other as he said it won't be up to him to replace them. He said it was because of the fallout from the road salt and sand. Three out of 4 rims were pitted, I had explained its only 4 months old they shouldn't look like that and he basically agreed. Cheap cheap materials is the problem. Now I sit and wait, and know exactly what they will say. I wonder what they will look like when my warranty is done in 3 years.

sucks. i am ridiculous about washing off my wheels/chrome, etc. when it's freezing out. sometimes you can't avoid leaving the crap on there for a week or more. i live my the ocean so i am at even MORE of a risk with the salt water crap! my aluminum parts look like they were in the ocean for a month already! good luck. i just used mother's mag&aluminum polish on a power ball and my wheels came out 95%. THERE'S SOME STRANGE "SHADOWING" ON A FEW AREAS I CAN'T GET RID OF???

I had to get my factory installed running boards replaced at the 1 year mark.... the drivers side running board had what I would call "dark stains" that ran in streaks... it was certainly caused by oxidation, there was small pits as well.... the dealer replaced them a month ago with a new set, but a week ago upon close inspection I saw a couple of very tiny rust pits, I'm talking the size of a sharp pencil tip, on the passenger side. You can do what you like but the "chrome" on these trucks are not very heavy and won't last. I can only imagine what they will look like in 5 years or so....

They don't make chrome/metal like they used to in the 40s-60s... there is an old car wreck down a woods path close to where I live that is what I believe to be an old 1960 Chevy Nomad... its basically completely grown in with trees and there isn't much left to it but the chrome bumper still shines like a new dime and you couldn't flake it off with a hammer! I would like to see what my truck would look like if it were abandoned in the woods and was 40 years old.. lol... I wouldn't say there would be anything left to it except the plastic pieces (and even that is made cheaply) :tear:

I hear ya both, my rims are pitted after 4 months, I can only imagine after 40 years. Its very frustrating as I am so maticulate on keeping it clean. You spend so much money it should last without these problems, for may years. Everythings made so much cheaper and they want top dollar

You probably will not even see the chrome anymore.

even on my BOTH silverados, an 01 and an 04 with the same exact aluminum 16 inch rims, every rim has stains and are chipping and peeling pretty badly on their own.. very annoying

Never had any problem with the chrome on my 2007 V-Max. The rear chrome bumpers still look like new, the front chrome grille still looks great. I am going to replace the chrome grille with a painted to match grille though. Hope the dealer fixes your problems.
