Just Bought My Wife A New Honda Civic.

I guess you could say I am GM loyal, my last 6 vehicles have been purchased from the same Chevy dealer! I bought my silverado in Dec of last year, since then I have put over 10k miles on it. Needless to say I live in my truck, and with gas prices going out the roof it is really hurting. My wife had a 02 Trailblazer, was a great car, got 170k out of her with almost zero problems. So we decided that we should trade the TB in and get a small car, I should drive it and she could drive my truck. So being GM loyal I went to my same Chevy dealer to look at a Cruze. Honestly I knew I would have to shop before I went in and I couldn't just buy a Chevy this time. Why? I have been overall disappointed with the quality of my Silverado, I just don't feel like she is gonna be there in 10 years like my previous Chevys.

Anyways, I thought the Cruze's were a little cheaper than the competition. There not and they have no rebates on them. So I start looking the car over, its a 18k LS model with a manual(yuck, all they had that was under 20k), and it had no cruise control(a car named cruze with no cruise? cmon), and no spare tire. So aside from those little issues, I decided to take one for a test drive, the first thing I noticed was the noisey engine, and I don't mean cab noise. It was noisey outside, almost like a lifter? So I had him get another one, it sounded worse. This is the 1.8 non turbo engines too, so I just don't know. The car drove great, rode great, and had decent power. So what pushed me away? The lack of quality in my truck and other newer silverados, when I heard that engine I got nervous. This care had the typical cheap GM feel, but I am use to it. I just don't trust GM, the seem to be cutting every corner to make a penny. They charge $100 for a spare tire? Seriously?

I got a fully loaded Civic for the same price, they gave me more for my trade and the Civic feels like its built MUCH, MUCHHHH better than any GM product I've owned. I even drove a couple of used ones, I was shocked at how much like new they felt. So I may be just one person, but GM your money cutting greed has cost you a sale and possibly a customer. :thumbs:

The Civic is a very good little car, there is a reason why you see so many of the damn things on the road. :thumbs: Bummer to hear the Cruze was a bit rough around the edges. I sat in a loaded one when I was buying my truck just for the hell of it and was way impressed, especially when you think of the miserable cars that preceded it.

Fully loaded to me means every option there is and I dunno about getting a civic with leather and navigation for 18k unless they are really giving them away because the new one is out next month :thumbs:

Absolutely Love our Cruze. I have the 1.4 Turbo though...it doesn't have any noisy lifters...or lifters at all for that matter...LOL

 

We got an LT with Bluetooth, Onstar, A6, tilt, cruise, AC, heated mirrors...and what ever else....

 

It was 22K for ours but I got 500 for military discount and 1000 for previous GM customer, so we paid 20.5K

Yeah...GM Canada gives the military a 500 dollar discount...

 

Civic is a really nice car too though...and reliable as it gets. Don't know about the Cruze and reliability...its too new...and I don't care to search UK boards for the Opel equivalent. I'll likely have it for 5 years or less than we'll get something new...so its as reliable as the warranty. :thumbs:

In the UK it is a Chevy cruze as well, I dont think Opel/Vauxhall have a version of it, they sell the Isignia which is the same as the Buick Regal here. It is Opel in europe and Vauxhall in the UK.

I'm a loyal GM guy to, but i would not buy a small car from them. They are good at making big trucks and SUV's. If you want a small car buy a Toyota, Honda, or Nissan.

I've owned two Civics prior to my truck.. and would recoemmend them in a heartbeat. Very reliable cars and well built. Just my $.02

Well the Cruze got really good reviews, almost every credited site I read said it was comparable to a civic and blows cars like the Corolla out of the water, but when I saw they were charging 100 bucks for a spare tire, and the engine was noisey, I got cold feet. They just didn't have the car I wanted either. Too many add on's I didn't need or not enough. He said he could order one or find one. Honda's inventory was much better and they package there cars MUCH better. Like I said, the car drove pretty good, its not a solid as the civic, but it was impressive. We have had our Trailblazer since 03, it was a GREAT car, the only reason I was doing this was for gas savings and I wanted to get another vehicle that would last another 10 years.. I just don't have that kinda confidence in GM right now.. :sigh:

It is now...But it used to be something else I believe...or the powertrain used to be in something...I know its surly not a GM drivetrain.

Good Choice! I had a 2006 Civic LX 2 door, loved the power, and the room. Sound system, handling, and overall quality were superior. The problem is it only gets 23/25 MPG's city. 35MPG's is possible on 40 mile and longer trips.

I had my Civic 4.5 years and it ran OK...front brake pads wore out at 27,000 miles, and the engine had a coolant leak, I had to start topping the reservoir after 34,000 miles.

Honda knew about this problem and extended my engine warranty..very nice of them. I traded it in because of that. I bought the car to save gas and go 200,000 miles without problems..didn't happen for me. The later models didn't have the overheating problem the 06 had. Our other Honda..2000 LX Accord is pushing 180,000 hard miles with no problems...the kids (30-somethings)are beating it, and it holds up.

 

Oh P.S. Good luck trying to clean the inside of the front and rear glass, special tools required! :sigh:

They don't build Honda's and Crapota's like they used to, that's for sure, either that or could the domestic product finally have caught up in reliability? Naahh. Can't be.

I myself have been in the market for a honda civic, preferably from the 90's though. Something with around 200,000kms

I am in the market for a late 70's early 80's

I think they rock....of course I think a lot of cars rock...some that only me and a hand full of others think that way of.

 

If my wife left me alone I'd be broke and have a drive way full of old cars in various stages of repair....but she doesn't leave me alone...and I'm just broke. :lol::lol::lol:

 

But at least we have a couple nice vehicles and RRSP's and buying a house....and and and....but I don't have a project anymore...I sold the LJ-80 so we don't have to move it to the new house, or across Canada if I get posted.

 

I am thinking about buying a Honda motorcycle though...something 80's to build a Cafe Racer...much easier to move if I need to.

 

No man...you definitely didn't do wrong by buying the Civic...it was on my mind when I traded the Cobalt. As was a Corolla, Sentra and a Genesis.

 

But I got a good trade and the Cruze...and any other vehicle had the two discounts on it for me. Also the warranty rebate was there too.

And I am getting 28MPG city with the Cruze, so I think I did OK.

my mom has a manual cruze with a 1.8 and i have been driving it for the past 6 days since shes on a buisness trip. it really is a amazing car, it handles awesome and it consistently gets 28mpg. has dropped to 26 with my driving though. fit and finish seem very well on par with foreign cars, and the best part about this car is being able to plug my ipod in the center console and control it from the steering wheel. only complaint is that the cloth seats get kinda uncomfy after longer drives.

Yeah the seats could be a bit more comfy.

I have the 1.4T with the A6...like I said 28MPG city...I cant complain about that one bit. Plus, both my wife and I love the car so we drive it much more than the truck saving fuel and mileage on it..so maybe I can keep it longer than 3 or 4 years this time... :lol::lol:

 

Can't really complain about anything much...its more than what you'd expect from a $22K ca I mean the cobalt LT was damn near the same price...but like you said, the fit and finish looks like something from a higher class of vehicle. I have the black cloth on the dash too...I think its pretty cool myself. Not a fan of the colored interiors, like red and blue....but the black on black is nice...as is the tan vinyl...just different I guess.

 

Actually, the fit and finish of cars double the price from GM aren't as good....like the Camaro for example. The interior is hideous on it...and the want 40+ for them here for a 2SS. My buddy was gonna buy one that was on the lot for 34 on ridiculous sale cause our local dealership is getting reno'ed and its a '10...its a 1SS/RS with cloth. He was so unimpressed he didn't even want to drive it...and even after being coaxed to drive it...he said it handles like shit and feels like it has 200hp...not 425. he said his crossfire handles better sounds better and feels faster...he knows its not faster...but it feels like it... He just said that overall it didn't feel fun, and why buy something like that if it isn't fun.

    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package. 
    • So, do I go elbow-deep on this thing or list it for sale and play dumb? Seems to "runs good."   I'm about $1200 away from having: -a rebuilt injector ($300) -a new cat ($250) -a new cat back exhaust (OE style) ($300) -a new AC compressor ($200) -AC refrigerant charge ($150)   In theory, this should rectify the obvious detracting issues from its value and operability. Cold AC with a non-squeaking AC pulley both sounds and feels good. An exhaust that isn't cut/hacked in 17 different places and doesn't vibrate on a crossmember would make it sound and feel less janky. A working cat would help the stink, and will save the earth, but *if and only if* the fuel system is working properly, which would also address the intermittent "rich" CEL.   Heard a good one... CEL for "Rich condition" means you haven't spent enough money on the truck lately, and it's letting you know.   Rebuilding the injector would seem to be the most important part. Replacing the cat would be secondary. I don't think mine is plugged or overly restricted, but it might be a little restricted? I have no good way to tell other than seat of the pants feel. I hate the smell.   The current theory is I have a rich idle problem: A bad fuel pressure regulator, or a leaking injector(s) being the highest probabilities. I already replaced the FPR but that doesn't mean its replacement isn't also bad. It was a new part from Dorman, but the packaging looked like it had been sitting on a shelf for 20 years.   This is the (single) upstream O2 sensor shown at idle. I'm getting a lot of "rich" it seems. Sometimes it stays high like that and doesn't drop down. That makes me think it's processing injector leaks or a partially stuck open injector.     Other times it looks like this. Nice oscillations between rich and lean, which is what I think it should be. Under load and at speed, the oscillations are nice and tight and uniform looking, high and low.     Fuel trims suggest the PCM is compensating pretty hard at idle to pull fuel out. But it's not enough to trip a CEL. Something about slowing to a stop: brake vaccum booster, EGR, or the EVAP purge is delayed, or there's pooled fuel in the intake again that's draining into a cylinder is enough to set the CEL. Of course, in two days of driving, it hasn't set. I was hoping to actually look at the freeze-frame data when it sets. IAT is high because it's idling on an 83 degree day here.  
    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.
