I think this 2013 Malibu is only second to the king of the mid-sized class, the Sonata. It makes the Fusion look like a Pinto! And now, we get word that it will get 38 MPG highway in ECO form!

 

Chevrolet surprised attendees at its press conference today by also rolling out the Malibu ECO, an eAssist-equipped high efficiency model that's expected to earn fuel economy ratings of 26 mpg city and a lofty 38 mpg highway. Powered by a 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder and aided by the aforementioned eAssist mild hybrid system and special aerodynamic tweaks, GM says the Malibu ECO can go up to 550 miles between fill ups, delivering fuel economy figures that would make some hybrid family sedans envious.

I love the car's look but can't get behind the 4 cyl-only lineup. The Sonata has a turbo option and Fusion has a powerful V6 still and has available AWD. I know some don't like AWD but that's a big selling point in any area that has snow. The AWD with a decently powerful engine make it a better package.

Glad to see GM not hampering the Malibu with an AWD system that would be used a handful of times every year. Great to see them focusing their efforts on real innovations and not gimmicks like AWD.

Thats big time gas mileage for a car of its size for sure. Good job GM. Now, if you want to talk about gimmicks get off charging extra for the SFE model or what ever its called and offer it across the board without a surcharge. Ford does this also and it drives me up a wall. Its a marketing gimmick that is pure BS imo. I wonder what the regular model with get?

Hey, if people pay for it...then more power to the automakers. And Ford has the SFE models...

 

And GM made a great move by offering the 2012 LaCrosse with the eAssist technology at no extra charge.

I live in Minnesota. We just finished our 5th snowiest (maybe even 4th...I can't remember) winter on record. I can count on one hand how many times I used (notice, I didn't say 'needed') 4WD/A4WD. It's a gimmick.

 

A $500.00 set of snow tires will out perform AWD every single time...and they will also help you stop and turn. Something AWD will not.

 

And Subaru sells very few automobiles compared to the rest of the mainstream brands...but I would love to see proof that AWD is the reason they gained sales...

I dont consider 4wd or AWD a gimmick. I live in Kentucky which is a borderline state weather wise and sometimes its nice to have. Is it needed? Most of the time its not. But, if you live on a farm or in a rural area like we have its a must have almost.

 

I have friends that live so far back off the road that its hard to get to their place in the summer. IN the winter its impossible without AWD or 4wd. My parents have a AWD 4 Runner and its been a life saver a time or two. It cost a lot extra but its no gimmick when you can get to where you are going when the weather gets nasty. I would not pay extra for it myself but its far from a gimmick when it pulls you through.

 

ONe more thing. The stock Michliens have over 70K on them and still have another 10K in them. Who cares what snow tires would do? These tires are quiet and wear well. In our enviroment they are perfect. Most of the time they are just on the road humming along and traction is not an issue.

 

AS much as it pains me to say it this 4 Runner has been the best new car or truck I have ever seen. Other than sucking gas down its been flawless.

I realize they are still a minor player but they still have been selling cars like mad. And you can claim all the increased awareness bs you want, I'll take the easier driving a 4WD enables all day long. With as clueless as most drivers are I already have my hands full watching for them, I want to make sure the truck will go where I intend it to if something goes wrong.

Snow tires are more capable than ANY AWD system. They cost FAR less, they require FAR less maintenance, and are FAR less to repair.

Depends. A 2WD vehicle will be easier to control in the event of a skid. And "AWD" is a fallacy unless the vehicle has a center locking diff, and a locking diff in each axle.

 

Otherwise...your so-called "AWD" vehicle...is just a glorified 2WD vehicle./ My mom's Escape...with it's dismal "AWD" system is a perfect example of that. This past winter, she had the drivers rear tire spinning and the front right tire spinning. That's 2WD in my book.

I have family that lives up in Montana, way up in the Rocky Mountains. Town is just at about 1 mile in elevation. They have snow from late Sept all the way usually to April. They all have Suburau's. They swear by them for foul weather. The further west you go and the higher in elevation you get, the more Subarus you see. My bother and sis-in-law have an Outback with over 150k on the clock and it has been rock solid reliable.

 

Everybody I've talked to likes their Subaru's. The only downside is their engineers are on crack when they put things inside the engine compartment. I've talked to a few owners that like to turn their own wrench's, and have told me they are not a lot of fun to work on.

 

AWD is not a gimmick.

The turbo motors are a bit tight but I would wrench on standard Subaru engines all day long. Super easy to work on for a modern car. Gearbox, not so much though!

Subaru uses a different AWD system then others, read up on it, They have center and axle diff's.

Also if you think AWD does not help you turn you got some screws loose in your diff....power transfered to the front drive/turning wheels would always help move the vehicle in that direction.

      Getting greedy...   The AC pump has been replaced at least once per service records, and it's been recharged twice since 2018 or so, in approximately 2 year intervals between those charges.   It was done at the same shop...clearly they were enjoying the revenue of recharging the system periodically versus actually tracking down and fixing the leak. I learned that the owner was 88 years old when she passed in 2023, so maybe they assumed only a temporary fix was needed anyway.   The system is basically empty now, the compressor spins freely, so I'm guessing it "just needs a recharge".   I vacuumed it down, and it has basically held overnight. Doesn't appear to leak under vacuum, check! So it must leak under pressure. I don't have a way to pressurize the system and pressurizing it with shop air wouldn't be great for the air dryer (which is probably toast anyway?)   The dryer (accumulator? I'm not an AC expert) has a Schrader valve, but the high side has an old ball-type valve, which are notorious for leaking. It's clearly had schmutz blown out of it at one point because the line/area next to the valve is coated old black crud, which I assume is AC refrigerant residue/oil, or maybe even dirty dye. I think I'll roll the dice and replace the valves. I have a black light around here somewhere so I'll find it and shine it around the engine bay in the dark to see if there's any dye.   I can't think of another way to track down the leak other than injecting some dye (if it doesn't have any) and having it charged up. We can't buy R134a off the shelf here anymore, so I'll run it up to Jiffy Lube and have them do it. I think I have a coupon. At the very least, the charge should last long enough for a year or two, according to history. I think this truck will be long gone by then. But cold AC is a selling point.

      Got the truck back today.  Called them yesterday to get an update, and miraculously my truck is finished?!?! The $13k out the door was complete bullshit!  Ended up being over $14k.  They added some bullshit service bulletin that I cant even find, where they replaced my radiator without telling me or asking me, and charging me for it.  Need to do more research into it, cause they leaked the first delivered radiator was ran over by FedEX.  Sounds like bullshit to me. 2.5 Months for an engine swap, which ended up being remanufactured, not new; ****ing ridiculous.  Brakes are squishy as hell, not sure if its from sitting.  Will give a couple days to see it that figures it self out.  GAVE IT BACK TO ME WITH 1 GALLON OF GAS!  Just filled the tank the day before drop off, more bullshit.  My dash cam SD card was formatted, not really much I can do about that. 3 year, 100k GM warranty at least.  Time to sell it and say **** off to GM.  Bad experience.  Cant wait for the survey email to come through.  Overpriced Raptor R, here I come!

      If I forget the phone in the truck, and forget the truck in the phone, and reconnect.  It works great for the day.  Truck sits overnight, and the next day is a no go.  It will connect Android Auto via usb cable, but not bluetooth.   Ive tried Everything in this thread so far, and nothing works for more than a day.   I think I might have to go to the dealer and have them flash the pcm.   thanks for all the suggestions guys. 👍

      2022 2500HD Crew Z71 Duramax single alternator.  Recently had the primary (water pump / fan) belt tensioner pulley bearing to fail while hundreds of miles from home of course the plastic pulley melted and belt shredded which took out some wiring. Found a replacement tensioner assembly and belt to continue now would like to find a replacement for just the pulley and bearing to have a spare assembly in case of a repeat, the rest of the tensioner is fine. Has anybody here found a correct replacement part for just the pulley and bearing? Any help is appreciated.

      +1 for the 3.0   Perfect for 1500 pickup towing duties.   Perfect engine for a 1500 pickup period. Huge torque at stunningly low RPM makes it feel a lot lighter than it is. The fuel mileage is insane for a tall and heavy 1500... 30+ on the highway. Mid 20's around town.   It's probably not perfect if you bought a 6.2 for the braaaaaaapppppp V8 noises and wrapping it out to 6k. The LZ0 acts and sounds like a small turbo diesel and there's nothing you can do to make a small turbo diesel sound like a big one, and you can't make an inline diesel sound like a V8 diesel/big Duramax. It's a different driving experience altogether.   Drive one, I think you'll like it, though...
