Oem Battery Took A Dump Today

So I come out of work, get in, try to start and click, click....... click..........................click DONE.

No warning, started fine twice earlier in the day. Heck, I didn't even have enuf juice to run the radio. Deader than a stump.

Luckily, had jumper cables in the 'ol underseat storage bin, and a buddy pulled in to park right next to me. Needless to say I was off to the races in 3 minutes, but.......

LOL, got a new batery installed on the way home. Got 3.7 years out of the OEM battery. Drove freeway 10-15miles to my favorite shop, pulled in front of the bay. From the time i shut her down, to the time the tech wanted to pull it in, dead again. 3 guys pushed it into the bay.

They checked the charging system as well, and said that was all good. Battery test: it failed miserably....heh

Seems like this is a little soon for a battery to take a dive. Can't remember the last vehicle I owned that I ever had to change a battery on except for a 91 F150 that got a new battery at 100,000+ miles/5-6 years. My last three vehicles were all traded with mileage raning from 40-70k, 4 years + on all but one of them. No batteries for them.

I know it happens. Just lucky i had someone pull up with a good battery. Worst of all I was jumped by a FORD RANGER.... LOL

I'll be hearing about that tomorrow I'm sure.

Don't feel too bad, I just replaced the battery in my mom's 08 Hyundai Santa Fe with only 18,000 miles on it. Got that Korean piece of junk (even said made in Korea) out of that and got a made elsewhere NAPA in it with a 72 month warranty that I have complete trust and faith in. ((Probably made by Johnson Controls down in Mexico, could not find any thing indicating where it was made)

Most of my GM vehicles and people I know with GM only get about 3 years or so out of an OEM battery. I just replaced one in my 07 Sierra, it was still working but wouldnt hold a reserve and would run down in just a minute.

My 06 is still on the stock battery. I'm planning to replace this summer though as I know it is getting pretty old and could go at anytime.

Another 06 here with an OE battery living on borrowed time. 5 1/2 years now. Might be time to go shopping for one.

Yikes that is early. Every battery I have ever owned has lasted 6 years at least. Napa batteries are made by DEKA and they are 100% domestically produced. There are only really 4 major battery manufacturers out there; Optima, Deka, Johnson controls and Exide. They all have their pro's and con's and they all make several different models of batteries under several different brand names and all have different specs and quality levels, even for the same application of battery (same part numbers). Finding a good, long lasting battery is almost a crap shoot simply because there are so many variables. So far I have had the best luck with Napa legend, Duralast gold and Interstate megatron batteries but that is just me.

Johnson Controls makes the Optima, as well as most of the Die Hard brand, Wal Mart batteries, and a host of others.

My 06 (built in July of 05) has the original. May get an Optima and wait to install it until mine dies.

My 04 has the original AC/Delco in it....So far so good...lol.lol..

I have never had a GM battery last 3 years. 89 Silverado 90 Beretta 96 Silverado 00 Regal 02 Denali They always died between 2 and 3 yrs. It must be this Texas heat!

Have always had good luck with Duralast gold, Optima, and Die Hard batteries

Oddly enough, the Delco battery they replaced (with a NEW Delco) came with a 70 (72? can't remember right this sec) month warranty. Based on these posts (which all suprised me to be honest), looks like I have an unlimited stream of new batteries looking forward.

That's a LOOOOOOOT of folks reporting 2-3 year battery life. Wow!

I thought mine was a sig-sigma unit or something.... lol

Well, jumper cables in the car often struck me as a "why in the he## am I hauling these things around in my bin all the time" thing, but now I am glad I had them in the truck.

Always tons of folks around to assist in a jump-start, seems like noone carries jumper cables anymore.

I'm old school... I can still remember my dad (god love him and may he RIP) giving me the "BEL" (Basic Equipment List) lecture on vehicles (at least what was always in the trunk of his 71 Impala 454 (that thing was fast for something the size of an M1 tank)... you know, Jumper cables, fuses, wiper blade or two, flahslight, work gloves, first aid kit, basic wrench/socket set, etc., etc., LOL. The fact that it was embedded like that on my RAM chip I am sure made him proud yesterday afternoon..... LOL

Replaced my battery in my 06 earlier this year. the original one lasted about 5 years. It wasnt dying but I could tell the voltage was dropping. Replaced it an EnerSys battery (rebadged to Diehard Platinum)

Our Tahoe (turned 3 in Feb) had a battery issue not to long ago. I had it in the garage to change to the DL3 mirrors, after replacing them went to start the truck and nothing, radio worked though. The time reset to 12:00. I only had the key in the run position for a few mins adjusting the mirrors and checking the signals to make sure they worked. Put my battery tender on it for about an hour, got it started and was able to get my truck in the garage overnight. Left the charger on overnight and havent had any issues to date.

That's fortunate. Like I said, I did 15 miles of 70mph freeway driving to get to the shop (a decent charge under normal circumstances). In the three minutes after I shut her down and they came out to take care of her, battery was down the crapper in that few minutes......toasted.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.
    • How about them NICKS!!!
    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
