They couldn't keep enoug fans around for the games in the Charlotte area.  College basketball is the draw there and the NFL and NASCAR.  THe Hornets just couldn't make the money.

Seems I remember it being about a Colliseum about a year ago.  They wanted Charlotte to build them one, and Charlotte said "build it yourself you bunch of millionaires!"

The Hornets started talking about moving, Charlotte said Good Riddance!

it was over the stadium...

funny thing is that now charlotte is gonna build a new stadium and the NBA has already said they would give them a new franchise

The Coliseum was certainly a major factor. It was not over attendance, it was over the number of skyboxes in the coliseum. There had been proposals to add them to the existing coliseum, but they couldn't get enough of them in there to please the Hornets ownership group led by George Shinn. This coupled with Mr. Shinn's well documented love/hate relationship with the city of Charlotte resulted in the move. George Shinn's greed became legendary in Charlotte and the voters rejected building a new coliseum.

Man.  Everytime I saw one of their games on TV the colesium was nearly empty.  And on Pardon The Interuption they talked about the Hornets not being able to compete with the College Basketball of the area, and possibly the other professional sports.

Oh well.  Sounds to me like it was a combination of these things and P!$$ Porr ownership.
