Need Some Advice On Oil

So i've been useing good old dino in all my trucks as far back as i can remember, and currently have been running mobil high mileage for about 60k now(truck had 60k when i got it so its at 120k now) doing normal 3k oil changes and well i drive alot roughly 45 miles a day minimum, yes i know 3k is kind of a joke for modern oil but i've been juggling around the idea of switching to full synthetic high mileage oil but i have the stigma that switching to full sythetic now is just going to give me oil conusmption and a leaks...let alone i see 5k or longer intervals as jet black liquid sandpaper moving around my motor...give me some advice here guys lol what would you do?

In all of my vehicles I switched to Mobil 1 5w30 and just change it when either the oil life monitor tells me to or around 5K.

Ditto

i dont see a need to switch to sythetic. i have never run synthetic in my 2003 suburban since the day it was new, ive changed the oil around 4,000 miles religiously for all of its 158,000 miles and the engine still runs perfectly, dosent tick, knock, have any weird noises at all.

I still faithfully change my DINO oil every 3k miles, b/c i know what it looks like when it gets changed and I don't wanna run it like that anymore. I like knowing that my truck gets clean oil to run on, just like our pets get clean water to go on. Check the avatar, OLM's...... I pee on them.

Have an oil analisys performed on your regular oil at about the time you change it. Send it in and they can tell you what things are looking like and if you can get longer life out of the regular stuff. Chances are it'll be just fine and there will be no need to switch.

I send one off every other oil change.

Yes on the oil analysis. I've use Blackstone Labs for years, and they've uncovered a few mystery problems for me. I usually send them a sample every third or fourth oil change, or when I notice something weird. Just google to find them, and you can order a free test kit from their website.

2 cents ....

I switched my old '94 silvy to Mobil 1 synthetic with 195,000. I had been using castrol GTX 10-30 in it but a lifter started ticking around 190,000 miles so I switched to 10-40 Mobil 1 and the noise has stopped. No leaks or oil consumption.

Switching over to full synthetic will not be an issue. There are plenty out there running it with well over 200k on their vehicles and all is well.

You can stick with what your using and just bump it up to 5k an oil change. Save you some $$$ and will not hurt a thing.

The oil color after 3,000 miles or before that or whatever makes no difference. When are some of you going to get that if an oil is dark or darker than when you put it in it means it is actually working. If your oil comes out like it did going in, then you should be worried because it isn't doing its job.

" I change my oil after 3,000 miles because I don't like the way it looks". LMAO! What a waste of good oil.

Then you should know better than to waste oil by dumping it after 3,000 miles. Your UOA should tell you that. If you say that it doesn't, then either you don't know how to read it, you don't care or you are lying.

My, my, we are a passionate bunch aren't we.

Mulaka-

Why would someone lie about getting an oil analysis? Why would YOU care what HE does with HIS truck? If he was spending your money, then I could see you calling him stupid, or a liar, but he is not, so settle down!
