I've got a 2003 Silverado standard cab short bed 2wd 4.8L with rack and pinion steering. I'm trying to replace the inner tie rod and got it all torn apart but can't figure out how to remove it. On the rack, there is supposed to be a flat spot to put a wrench to hold the rack while you unscrew the tie rod. See pics. My service manual says ther should be a flat spot to put a wrench. Anyone know whats up and/or how to remove it without damaging the rack? I have the tie rod tool to make removal easier I just can't figure out how to hold onto the rack? Do I need to hold it or can I just start torquing on the end?

No flat spots, just spin it off. I always used a pipe wrench, but if you have the tool it should be a breeze. Be sure to clean it up nice with some choke cleaner and put locktite on the new one.
