Aux Oil Cooler And Oil Level

Something I've wondered about on the 900s. Also along the same line, there are a few posts were people are seeing the oil read high on the dipstick. I wonder if GM specs the same cap w or w/o the aux oil cooler. Maybe thats why some read high (w/o aux)?

purely a guess, but it's for simplicity.

 

when you drain the oil for an oil change the auxiliary cooler does not drain, just the oil in the pan.

 

With that in mind past factory fill there is no "capacity" difference to concern for the consumer or service shops. all trucks regardless of the presence of the cooler will take the same amount of oil in the pan. If GM were to supply two different capacities it would only serve to confuse people and cause error while servicing the vehicle. Regardless service procedures always advise to check the fluid level after to be sure that the level is correct and add additional as needed.

I added an oil cooler when the radiator was upgraded. It's only a 1/2 quart difference.

Keeping it simple, that's what I was thinking.
