Price My Transmission Guys

I'm thinking of swapping a 6 speed into my 2008 and I'd just like to get a few opinions on what you guys think I could recoupe from my old one.

Current transmission is a 4wd 4l70e with 70,000 miles, 90% highway, clean red fluid..... a decent unit in other words. It would be sold with converter and flexplate.

I'd say $1500 to $2000 as long as it's in good working order especially since its the HD version.

I'd like to hear more details on your swap. I don't think it's going to be an easy chore from what I've heard. You got details on this? I'm sure many would be interested in this.

Probably best to browse the web auto classifieds for comps. Look for "sold" prices, not asking prices. The economy is in the toilet and do-it-yourselfers are in the population that has been hit hard with the downturn.

I just googled 4l70e and found a few from around $800 to $1500. The high end was a built up race trans. Stockers seem around $1K.

it's worth not much more than a core charge. Just because it works now doesn't add much value.

I would say about $500 at best, but no less than $300.

With 70,000 miles it would take a fool to take it and install it without opening it up to at least go through it while it's out. Keep in mind when you price a transmission replacement for a stock unit, $300-400 of the price is just the labor to pull and install the transmission. Transmission parts are cheap. It's unlikely the buyer would need a flexplate, and unless they trashed the clutches in the previous trans they wouldn't need a torque converter.

edit:

here's some info no the swap from someone that's actually done it:

Thanks guys,

I'm not sure how bad the swap would actually be. The main challenges are the transfer case and the electronics and I THINK I have a good handle on how to cope with them both. Having said that, it's hard enough to find credible information about this swap online, I'm not going to make things worse by positng my thoughts on how works until I'm sure it all plays well together. In other words, if and when I have a functional 6sp 2008 I'll post up.

Thanks for the link NickV. If you're interested in more reading on what Keniff managed to accomplish search for iamkeniff on performancetrucks.net he has another thread there that covers the project. He does have his 2wd truck running with the 6sp, but his BCM is still disconnected, and at this point he's still got no manual electronic shift.

The lack of tap-shift wouldn't bother me, but without a working BCM I don't think he's got ABS or Stabilitrac either.

Your 08 TCM is under the hood. The 6 speed TCM is in the case. How are you going to deal with the massive wire harness differences?

How come you don't beef up the stock 4l70 instead of a swap? I wouldn't do it, I would rather buy the truck wit the 6 speed in it from the factory. How come u want to get rid of it?

IMHO... keep the 4L70, unless it's just a "fun" project you want to do.
