Anybody Here Know Audi's?

So my wife's 05 Audi A4 1.8T is not cooperating. I've tried posting in some Audi forums but nobody there seems to be really helpful or willing to help people out. So now I'm trying here. Does anybody here know Audi's/VW's?

 

Long story, short. She has codes P0171 (Bank 1 Lean), P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 (All four cylinder misfires). From everything that I've read the ignition coils are notorious for going out so we are probably going to replace them and see what happens. The car has almost 100K on it so it can't hurt to replace them anyways.

 

We are thinking that the coils are misfiring which is not letting all of the fuel ignite and burn causing it to go into limp mode and throwing the code that it is running lean. Because there is so much unburnt fuel, it is sending that unburnt fuel into the cat and causing the flashing CEL and potential cat damage.

 

This is our thinking but wanted to get some other opinions if anybody else knows much about Audi vehicles. We'd rather not take it to the dealership because Audi service prices are extremely expensive and generally about 2x the price of a comparable service at a GM dealership.

My buddies 05 Vw Jetta with the 1.8T is on its 3rd or 4th set, his is slightly modified though. His biggest problem was that the codes were intermittent and would wipe themselves out. CHeck them out online, he gets his shipped from somewhere in Europe for way cheaper.

If bank one is lean and then the computer tries to correct it by riching out the mixtures giving the misfires (fouling) in all cylinders then I doubt it is the coils but rather a short somewhere else, the mass flow sensor or a vacuum leak causing the sensors to think it is running lean. I know the computer controls on these things (all the VWs and Audi's) can be very easily confused into thinking that they are not running right. My sons B5 Passat ('99 V6) runs like shit and does the same type thing if there is the slightest vacuum leak. At least they seem to have fixed the ABS module short issue that shuts down at lot of the diagnostics in the later models. If the problem gets worse when it happens then the plugs will get fouled very badly.

I've cleaned the MAF sensor and I've gone over the whole engine looking for any vacuum lines that might be disconnected or cracked and can't find anything.

 

Just spoke to the Audi Service Manager and he said that they have not had the best of luck with just cleaning the MAF but that they usually have to replace it. That could be him just saying that so they can get more money but from what I've read that seems true as well.

The mafs go bad. And also they have a power out put module, its like a ignition module but they usually cause missfires with codes did you check the fuel pressure
