How To Stop Tailgaters.. Lol..

Ok I find this kind of amusing..

My mother recently (6 months ago) lost her drivers license due to Macular Degeneration, and even more recently (last month) was put on an Oxygen Respirator after her 4th battle with pneumonia and ongoing pulmonary fibrosis.

So now where ever she needs to go: doctor, shopping, whatever I have to drive her, and we have to take a 640 liter 3,000 PSI Oxygen Tank..

For those not aware, while these tanks do not pose any immediate danger, since oxygen fuels fire, and the pressured tanks are explosive, if they are damaged or in a fire they pose a significant risk.

I discussed the transport of these tanks with my insurance company as well as the California Highway Patrol, and both informed me that by law I am required to have 2 plaques on the vehicle to indicate that a pressurized and OPEN oxygen tank is being transported, failure to do so can lead to significant liability issues in the event of an accident (regardless of fault) if the tank exploded and injures anyone.

I got the exact specs from the CHP of what was required (minimum of 8" x 8" Square OSHA plaque) and had them made in a magnetic sign for the truck, so I can remove them when not needed.

While I was at the sign shop I decided to have a custom one made, that made it plain and simple I was transporting an open tank, because I didn't feel the general public would really acknowledge the 2 required signs, most people look right past them on commercial vehicles.

Well I got them and put them on Saturday for the first time. It was VERY amusing to see people ride all the way up my ass, as they do in L.A. then read the sign on the truck and back way the hell off or change lanes and go around me..

The whole day we were out no one would come any where near the back of my truck.. I should just leave them there all the time, lol:

tell me about it..

it amazes me how people will run up so close to the back of the truck that I can't see anything but the very top of their roof line..

especially at night, because now I can't see their headlights, or even an outline of their vehicle.

those 3 signs are light reflective, when headlights hit them they are light a neon light in your face.

Good idea but I would assume it was a joke sticker like people who ride around with "Rookie Driver" stickers on the back of their cars. I'm not a tailgater but I would probably think it was a joke. Sounds like it's working though so cool.

well I have gotten a few comments, most people seem to think they are real/serious probably because of the Disabled Plates on the vehicle..

plus when they pull up next to us they can plainly see mom with the breathing mask on.

If someone rides my ass i always start slowly going out of my lane then bringing it back in to make it look like im drunk driving. It works to, everybody drops waaay back!

keeping a cup full of gravel or change is great for throwing out the window at people

i seem to have these same effects with the Radioactive 7 and 1.4 explosive placards, esp when i use both. people don't seem to want to park near me either. haha

do you also need to have a class C license with the haz mat endorsement?

Better yet, solve the real problem. Get out of the left lane or learn to drive at the flow of traffic. If the posted speed limit is 80 MPH and you are poking along at 75 MPH, get out of the left lane. Remember, if you are being tailgated, you are the problem.

Sometimes, (Like Me most of the Time) You ARE Going the Posted Speed Limit (sometimes FASTER than the Posted Speed Limit!), and the TAILGATER wants to go Mach 2.2!

I don't drive the left lane unless I am passing. I don't recall making any statement to that affect in my initial post.

And your statement of "if you are being tailgated you are the problem" is just asinine, everyone is trained in drivers ed and on your driving test that you should maintain a 3 second following distance. In most states it is also illegal to tailgate, or follow too close.

I get tailgated in all lanes and on city streets as well as highway, and the problem is dumb ass retarded f--ktards that think they drive race cars and are on a NASCAR track and need to beat everyone to the next light.

And around here there is no posted 80mph the max is 65mph REGARDLESS OF WHAT LANE, in addition it is the MAXIMUM speed limit not the REQUIRED so if I want to drive 55 in the right lane f you and your idiocy go the f--k around. I believe the left most lane is for passing and stay out of it unless I need to pass someone, but in CA there is no such law all lanes have the same limit and no lane is designated as a passing lane except on rural roads. However I know how to drive, and I know the vehicle laws very well, and I also know that most people on the road are like you, clueless and in a big ass hurry to go nowhere as fast as they can.

    • Yep! This should be a pin somewhere as @pgamboa really dives into all of this. Thanks for reposting the link!
    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
    • Atlas, you kill me As aggravating as a project like this can be you have been unable to hide your fascination with learning and using that angst against this beast like a Ninjitsu Master. It amuses you, admit it now.      BTW, love your writing style. 😉
