Need Tuning Help

Recommended Posts

I have a 02 GMC Savana 5.7 That is all of a sudden gome flat. I mean that there is no power like there is no ignition advance. What I need is someone who has the software and knoledge to diagnose and tune. The dealer is useless and I don't have any local mechanics that are competent in the computer controls. Help. This is my work truck and I need it to WORK. Is there anyone in the ABE area that can help?

I have a multimeter and can do some testing. I don't know what the values are for the sensors. Can anyone provide that for me? What is a good scan tool to watch real time data?

Have you looked into the fuel delivery system? Filter, fuel pump etc...

Ok so here is the whole story. I bought the truck used with 65k. I have had problems with it since the day I bought it. I have been to the dealer more times than I can count and get one lame excuse after another. Now my warranty has run out and my transmission quit. One of the things that I had it to the dealer for was poor/soft shifting. Of course the S*/m service writer looked at me like I had three eyes in my head and tried to pretend that he had no idea as to what I was talking about.

Anyway back to the trans. Since it was out of warranty by 500 miles I had to change the trans myself. I picked up a junkyard trans changed the pan gasket and filter flushed the cooler and lines and threw in the "new" trans.

I tell you I had been suspicious of the trans right from the begining but WOW I thought that I had a new truck. Not that I want to roast the rubber off of my $200 tires but I sure could if I wanted to. I thought that I had cured my problems. My gas milage went from 8 to 11. I was dooing the happy dance until Friday when it all went south. Here we are back to the same lame dog that I have been fighting with. I knew as soon as I started it that morning that my gremlins had found their way back into the brain of my truck. You know when you turn the key it begrudgingly sputters to life. For a whole 2 weeks she started and ran like a real truck.

It ran fine for almost 2 weeks. I'm thinking that there is a bad sensor but I don't know where to start and what values are acceptable.

ABE area? Where exactly?

You need to find someone who is very comfortable with tuning software and can run several specific logs on your truck.

ABE as in Lehigh Valley? My old boss tunes with HP Tuners if you were looking for a tune for the truck but it sounds like you have more issues than that. Have you checked fuel pressure or anything? I might be able to borrow a snap on scanner from a friend and take a look at it for you. CEL isnt on or anything?

Moore Twp exactly.

I just bought a Palmer performance scan tool and trying to figure it out. As far as I can tell it the ecu doesn't support fuel rail pressure monitoring. So no I haven't. I have to play with the scanner some more and try to figure it out.

The scanner shows no codes and the cel is not lit. There is a comment that the voltage is high for the fuel level sensor.

I did notice that the voltage on the O2 sensors on bank 2 are a little high and my stft is a little lean which doesn't make any sense given my lousy gas mileage.

I can run a scan and post the log. Just tell me what to monitor.

The PCM will not monitor fuel pressure and therefore not a scannable parameter.

Elaborate on the o2 sensor voltage...are they oscillating or are they flat, vehicle warm or cold during this time?

STFT's will bounce around...monitor LTFT for the time being, post up the values.

Don't worry about the fuel level sensor.

What are the timing values when driving?

BTW, I live outside Bangor PA in Washington Township.

I will set up a log for those values and log my drive to stroudsburg. A bunch of back roads 512 33 80. Should be some good data. I'll post values when I get home tomorrow night.

So this morning I went to start my van, I had not ran it since Friday night, I turn the key it sputters to life goes kachunk, kachunk, kachunk and stalls. The smell of gas is overpowering. It took several minutes to get started again and I had to hold my foot on the pedal while it sputtered and misfired. I had to keep it revved up for a good minute and a half before it would even out and stay running. I have heard that the fuel rails leak inside the manifold and could cause this condition. Is there any truth to this and how do I check?

This is a screen shot of a 30 minute drive.

I can upload the log file if you would like to see it and have the program.

You can download an evaluation copy that will let you view the log file here: http://www.palmerperformance.com/downloads.php

screen shot

I'm watching the data stream and my VSS is way off like 20+ mph the voltage to my O2 sensors drops to 0 several times for several seconds.

according to the screen shot, the engine isn't running. You have the last data when you turned the key on. Start the engine and get live data. Have you checked the Cat for plugging up? Install a fuel pressure gauge on the rail, near the distbributor, drivers side, and determine fuel pressure. Should be in the 52-55 PSI range KOEO or more. Running should be about the same. IF the fuel pressure starts dropping right after turning off the key. Pinch off both supply and return fuel lines, that will tell you either a leaking injector or regulator.

Hope this helps.

The screen shot is after a 30minute drive and shows the min, max and average. You can see the time in the lower right corner. That is correct that the vehicle is not running. I could upload the whole drive if you want to see it.

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
