I just towed a 9000 lbs toy hauler 152 miles and part of that was a 7% uphill grade. not a fan. no trailer brakes. my 4.8 did it and wouldnt give up. what should i tow max with a 2wd 4.8 3.42 gears

my 5.3 2wd with 3.42 is rated for 7500lbs if i remeber right....so your less then that lol

my normal tow is a 15 ft horse trailer with like 5 pigs in it. my uncles 08 dodge 2500 had the transfer case grenade. so i was stuck with towing for the family trip

i know people that will tow 3 horses in a twin axle bumper pull with no issues..with a 1500 with the 5.3...main concern is to push the button

3.42 is not an option for my year truck and motor.

3.23=4700lbs 3.73=6700lbs assuming you have an extended cab.

edit: shortbox can tow 100lbs more.

well it is a tandem axle trailer. the toy hauler was also bumper pull. i have the autocal so i had a towing tune on. i guess this thread is a my truck did this and survived... but i also want to know the proper limits

Posted

well your changing the rules of the game with a tuner....i gave you my numbers as a rough starting point obviously your going have a lower limit then me...with a tuner your risking hard components let alone you dont know if you are at your limit even if you were on a stock tune

Out of all 2wd options for 1500, you would need a 6.0, and that only tows 10,300lbs, only in the extended cab standard box, and crew cab short box. All others fall short.

its going to get a 6.0 and 4l65e 3.73's in time. im kind of worried about my tranny

Although the tranny could be a weak point, I'd be more worried about brakes, with that kind of load. Obviously you don't tow it often it was in a pinch.

i dont have a brake controller so it had no brakes. thats why i didnt tow back. i had to drive back to go to class and i brought my uncle so he could pick his truck up from the shop. he drove it back so he can tow the downhill.
