Many factors come into play: Wind, hills, speed, A/C, acceleration, stops and starts, idles, etc.

I can get over 20 mpg on the highway with the A/C and cruise at 65 mph.

Fill up your tank, get on the highway and set your cruise at 65 and you should get pretty decent fuel mileage. It sounds like you probably have a lead foot.

Yeah, if you drive with a heavy foot, you'll pay at the pumps. And as mentioned, there's alot of factors involved.

Give us the specs on your truck

Motor size, gears, tire size,...

That will help us know if somethings wrong or you have a heavy foot

It is a LT1 version EXT Cab

Tires are P245 70r

Wheels are factory

Engine is 5.3 ltr

I bought it used so have no history on it.

It does have a LEER 700 on the back with a spoilerr

It also has the factory towing package on it

BTW on the interstate Hwys here in South FL if you are driving 65 you are considered a road hazard Snow Bird

Hope that helps

I'll offer this by way of comparison:

I bought my 2006 GMC Sierra SLT X-Cab 4x4 trailer package with the 5.3 liter, with 25,000 miles on it. All the odometers showed the same mileage, the trip odo had never been reset. The fuel mileage shown was from new until I bought it. It showed 15.3. I reset it right away and immediately started showing 17 or better in town and 20 or so on the highway. I figure either the previous owner didn't know what the overdrive was for, or had a heavy foot.

Your truck is probably just fine, and you just need to work on your driving habits. Use your cruise control as much as possible (even at 30 mph in town for long stretches), coast through parking lots, coast down hills and while approaching lights/stop signs, accelerate and brake nice and easy, keep it under 70 mph, track your mpg by calculator. Hard acceleration is probably the worst for your fuel mileage and it's extremely hard on your truck.

Crosswinds are worse on fuel mileage then a headwind. For every 5 mph faster you drive (over like 65 mph) your fuel mileage decreases by 7-10%. Your A/C will hurt your fuel mileage, but having your windows down at 45+ mph will actually hurt your fuel mileage due to the loss of aerodynamics. So A/C is actually better on the highway.

Improving your driving habits will help both your bank account and truck in the long run. Good luck.

Not necessarily. Sometimes, stop and go traffic, and red light will kill your mileage. I started driving a shorter route to work, but with a ton of traffic lights, and my mileage went from 16.5 mpg to 12.3 mpg or so. On the highway, I will usually get 18-19mpg going 70-72 mph. There are a lot of variables when it comes to a vehicles mpg's.

I DO NOT have a heavy foot at all. I am 55 and no tickets or accidents.

When I leave a stopped position I dont exceed 2200 rpm

My next door neighbor is a ASE Master Mechanic with over 27 yrs experience and has ridden with me on serveral occasions and I asked him if he thinks I have a heavy foot.....Nope (he works at a private owned shop that services high end European imports only. They wont touch a domestic truck)

There are codes on the computer. I want to take it to the Chev dealership but dont know what they should look for and at $75/hour I cant afford to give them the time to look in the wrong direction.

Go to O'Reillys or Autozone and get the codes read for free. Look them up and see what they mean. Make sure your air filter is clean.

That was meant to say NO codes on computer. There have been 15 flashed upgrades to it though

Yeah, I'd say something going wrong. Wonder why so many PCM updates. You should be getting alot better mileage.

How many miles on the truck?

WOW This is my last post. I took the truck to the dealership and they told me that one of the Computer flashes did not take properly and only way to repair it was to replace the unit. Cost to me $1800.

I am now an EX 30 yr Chevy owner and will trade the truck over the next 2 weeks

Thanks all for your help and non help. FYI dont be so fast to blame an issue on a persons heavy foot. I failed to tell you that I have no legs below the knee and drive with hand controls

I failed to tell you that I have no legs below the knee and drive with hand controls
