What would you all do?

I was in SC last week camping. Was parked smack in the middle of a snowbird convention. Out of 100+ rigs I was the only GM product. All was Ford power strokes pulling 36 to 40 ft 4 season rigs(17000-22000 lb rigs). I got the best compliment. I was told by numerous people that the new Duramax is the quietest diesel they ever heard and they were really surprised at how GM got it so quiet. When I popped the hood and they seen a gasser I got laughed at.  What the he11 can you say, ahh it is normal they all do it. Guy next to me was retired UAW from GM  and  he drove a  02 Ford power stroke(he must know something to buy a Ford with the GM discount he could have got)  he busted my a$$ every time I started my truck.  I can not get that out of my mind.  They ate me up all dang week. Called  me mr wanna be diesel all dang week and said looks like they left  the rocks inside your motor. I wanted to drive it  right into the atlantic ocean I was so embarassed for Chevy and my pride got busted down a bunch. Makes me wanna  hurl thinking about it.

Dang it , she tows good, 1500 miles of hard towing and not a drop of oil used. But now after that my truck does not seem the same to me. Heck I have not even cleaned it since the trip I am so disgusted with the situation. THe thought has even crossed my mind to go to 10,000 mile oil changes and to use cheap Fram filters . Why bother with the good stuf and 2500 mile changes like I been doing. It don't matter I have 13000 miles and 12 oil changes with good oil and ACpf59 filters.  When people start laughing and funning at my truck it's over . Sorry fellers but this is how I feel right now. Embarassed, let down, and somewhat ripped off , and I had not one bit of ammo to shoot back at the Ford guys. Not when 2 sites down the guy had 389,000 miles on a stock powerstroke that has been pulling a 39 1/2 foot 19,000 # rig all over North America and Canada.  Seriously what can you do or say??

What can you say?!

To Heck with them. You bought what you wanted right? So did they.

I feel like this every once in awhile.  Especially with all the rattles and clunks.  The engine noise doesnt phase me it comes and goes and doesnt last long.  I feel like trading it in but then i think how much fun it is to drive and i couldnt drive anything else.

I think the ford guys had nothing better to talk about.  I mean if all us chevy guys were with 1 ford guy i am sure he would get made fun of

Some people simply have no tact. Just a lack of proper upbringing and socialization. You should feel embarrassed for them. Lack of common courtesy is the norm, nowadays. Just ignore them and let them figure out the solution to their problem.

Oh the Ford Chevy battle has gone on forever. I am VERY VERY guilty of bashing the other 2. In high school the only gang fight, yep punching kicking young dumb and full of crap,  I was in was Forders vs the Chebbies after they could not collectively beat us on the road. Opps I mean strip. But this was different, they had me cold. I could not fight back with them . I wish I had some spare money to blow I would get me a set of headers,  put on two Thrush pipes and rock the campground. I know after reading some rv forums the older full times b!tch and moan about the loud exhausts on trucks. Go figure the rattle and smell of the diesels are nasty but a nice thumping small block bothers them.

You know he would.  That's just the way it is.

Don't worry about what they said.  You bought what you wanted AND it's not like you hang out with those people everyday.  Who cares?!?!

Geez, maggot, sorry to hear you were surrounded by nonfriendlies!  Bummer.

I've been there (not in SC), but in that situation also w/ friends of my inlaws, just ragging everything GM - I know it wasn't fun.

I agree with what others have said here - don't worry about it - you bought what you wanted, and presumably so did they.  And anyways, most Furd/Dudge owners are just puckered because they have had to always play catch-up, so they need to vent.

I dont understand.  So what was the problem, besides them laughing at you for no reason.

You say they complimented you, then say that they said something about "rocks in the engine"????

You cant compare a gassers mileage to a diesel, so dont even try it.

If nothing was wrong with the engine, or your pulling capability, i wouldnt worry about a thing.

I doubt they actually meant much of what they said.  They were not getting on your case because they hated your truck, they were doing it because you were the minority.  Ignore what they said and love your truck.  You bought it for yourself, not them.

Hey man,if your truck does what you want it to and you're happy with it then what other people say hardly matters.

H3ll,my ZR2 gets ripped on by Toyota owners all the time until they see it in action.Yours may not be the biggest and it may not be the baddest but that hardly makes a difference if it gets the job done.

Here's you a good example. This happened several months ago and I wasn't going to bring it up because it involves a Ford Powerstorke and I didn't want to be accused of brand bashing.

This is slightly outdated because it was posted in a private forum about 8 months ago but here you go:

Here I am at the house at around 12:30 this afternoon when I get a phone call from a friend.

One of his friends got stuck while trying to pull another one of their friends out and they need help.

Now,I'm not real happy about this because I just had the truck detailed on thursday but I decide to go and help out anyway.

By the time I get out there,I realize that truck # 2 is an F250 on 39.5's and there is a 2000 Z71 on 36's trying to pull him out.I watch this and see that the Z71 is having big time trouble pulling him out (he had Mickey Thompson, the sand tires). They see my truck and don't seem interested in giving me a chance to get the Ford out (you know, the whole compact truck discrimination thing) and in the process, the Z71 burries himself.

At this time, they have no choice so now it's my turn.I got them both out and didn't get stuck in the process but the truck is filthy! [/understatement]

Pics during the event

Filthy after the fact

In all seriousness, not a person out there except for the guy who called me believed I could get them out. This guy in particular owns a Toyota and has seen my truck in action so he knows what it can do and he was not doubting that I could have solved the problem with no trouble which is exactly what I did.

Bottom line, who cares what it is and how it's equipped as long as it does what you need it to do.

Edit-The guy standing at the rear of my truck with his thumb in the air in a pic from the first link is the same person who called me out.

You talked about the guy from GM who drove a Furd, I have a buddy that worked at Furd for 35 years and best of all his last name is FORD and he will drive nothing but GM usually GMC and Buick, his wife always had GM when he worked at Furd and he would drive it everytime that they had a Job 1 meeting.

Maggot you need to step outside and take a look in at what your saying.

You are at a campground and your surrounded by ford nuts. Now your upset because they were making fun of your truck because it makes a little noise. You should of said, Okay, My truck ticks a little, what else you got? Then pointed out the fact that your 6 liter was doing the same job they needed powerjokes for. Don't let anybody dis your truck. I'd like to know what kind of fuel mileage they're getting. I'm sure it's a little better than yours but not much.

As for the UAW retiree. I wouldn't try to read to much into that. I work with guys who can get a discount from GM or Ford and they buy Dodges  :puke:  I think they're a few frys short of a Happy Meal.

If it makes you feel better around these guys, go get ya ford. Then we'll make fun of you.  :puke:

    • I would argue that GMPartsDirect has that info wrong.    The service manual for R+R the lower arm and for adjusting camber/caster, none of the steps say to discard and replace the nut or the bolt.    The only part that gets discarded is the plastic cam adjustment retainer that is in the eccentric from the factory.     The LCA nut torque spec is: First Pass: 180 Y (133 lb ft) Final Pass: 90 –105 Degrees
    • The filtering to wear relationship goes like this:      'Relative Engine Life "Factor" new divided by the factor old. So 8/3= 2.67. That result is the multiplier thus if a motor had an effective life of 100K using a filter with a 45 micron rating at a Beta ratio of 75 then a filter with a micron rating of 10 at a Beta of 75 would improve expected engine life to 267,000 miles.    Wear metals are an indirect indicator. Less is better and the motor lives longer but there isn't a multiplier like there is for filtration so well documented. Most of that has to do with the sensitivity of the wear metals tests themselves. They read a 'slice' of the spectrum but not the absolute values for the entire spectrum. So a general indicator that is used WITH the results of other tests. Two others considered in this post. Trending is very important.    There is also the influence of corrosive wear which may be seen in the wear metals but separate from load based or viscosity mitigated indication. It's a small graph but the gray line is wear vs the TBN/TAN crossover. Not as useful as it used to be as there are now new chemistries for acid remediation that don't show up in standard UAO testing. They will catch up or be found liars. Only two possible outcomes, eh?
    • One thing that comes up over and over is that the torque converters are the weak link. Many of the failed transmissions have the same thing in common. The torque converter grenades and then metal torque converter shards end up destroying the transmission. One of the best things you can do is if your transmission is still fully functional, change out to one of the aftermarket billet torque converters. There are several good choices mentioned in different threads here to make your choice. After that, then you can decide about trans tuning. My trans failed at around 95,000 miles. It got replaced under the GM protection plan. The remanufactured trans comes with a 100,000 mile /3 year warranty. I still have just under 1 year left. So far, so good. As long as it's still working good next year, an aftermarket torque converter is going to get installed early spring. If the trans and OEM torque converter fail by then, I will get it replaced under warranty and immediately have an aftermarket torque converter installed. A warranty replacement trans of a replacement trans will no longer have the warranty so I will bulletproof it from the get go.
    • You got'a be cooking right now. Just looked at the weather map. Yuck!    We are right back to $4 today.
    • Pushing $4.00 a gallon in most places, still $3.75 in town but it's going to spike tomorrow for sure.   Diesel back up to $4.60-5.00.
