2003 Gmc Towing Performance Boost

2003 GMC Sierra 1500. Extended cab short bed. 4.8L V8, auto trans and 3.73 gear posi rear end. It came new with the factory installed towing package. I bought this thing new and have always run Mobil 1 oil. 67,400 miles currently. The only modification I have done is install a cold air intake. My max towing capacity with this setup is about 6700 lbs. Just bought a travel trailer that will gross out after being loaded at about 4500 lbs. Well within my truck's ability. My question to everyone: What would be your suggestions to develop a little more power? I not talking internal modifications to the engine. Won't go there. I have had suggestions from friends of running dual exhaust, headers, performance chips (do they really work?) and so on. Any suggestions and thoughts are appreciated. I know my truck is ok pulling this trailer just trying on making it a little easier for it. Current tire size P265/70R17.

Gear swap would be my number 1 thing to change. If your running the stock tire size, 4.10's will work great but if your running a larger size, I wouldn't be afraid to run 4.56's. Next would be long tube headers and a custom tune.

From experience:

*a 4.8L with 3.73 will tow <5,000 lbs all day without an issue as long as you aren't getting in to the mountains.

*don't waste money on a programmer, any gains will be negligible.

*headers and open exhaust will only hurt you. While it can increase horsepower on the top end it lowers torque on the low end, and the 4.8L is already hurting on torque, you don't need to make it worse - you NEED torque.

 

Honestly the best and cheapest thing to do would be to swap in a 5.3L You could pick up a used low mile 5.3 for ~$500 and it can be swapped in with one or two mechanically inclined friends in 1-2 days depending on how hard you work and how much you know. It's a direct swap.

I have a 4.8 with 3.23 gears. I tow a 4K# (low profile) trailer and a truck load of stuff. I regularly tow the trailer to 8,000' in the high Sierras and have no problems.

 

The only issue that I have is that if I am climbing a steep grade, I have to put it in 2nd and increase my speed to ~65MPH (@3600RPM) to maintain the torque necessary to climb the grade without slowing. There is about 4-5 places in the entire 350 mile trip that I have to do that and it's for about 5 minutes on each grade. 25 minutes out of a 7 hour trip surely isn't worth changing anything (for me).

 

I just leave it in 3rd, set the cruise and let it go. When I see a grade ahead, I take it out of cruise, increase my speed a bit (68MPH tops) and usually make it to the top without shifting to 2nd. If it's a long grade, as soon as it ges to 2nd, I shift to 2nd and leave the cruise set @ 65.

 

I would LOVE to have your 3.73s, only because I could climb any grade without having to break the speed limit.

 

If you go to 4.11s you will increase your RPM and have better torque at lower speeds. You will also increase the engine wear over the life of the engine. If you go to 4.56, you will be running at awfully high RPM during normal driving and your MPG will go down. However, you would be able to pull a house.

 

I just can't see sacrificing MPG and engine wear for the small % of time that you may benefit from having lower gears.

 

Personally........ I would sell the truck and buy the one that I want before doing an engine swap. That's asking for a world of problems.

Don't change a thing, other than maybe your expectations. Stick to 3rd for pulling, and 2nd for climbing. I know from experience, you can run in 2nd gear up steep grades for hours without issue (ask me how I know), but you won't usually need to. You'll find that 3rd will keep you going over most terrain. If you use cruise, it may shift to 2nd too easily, but it doesn't hurt. If you use the right foot instead, you just let it slow down a little instead of shifting.

    • I like the idea.  I would pick diesel if I had a choice. I need pictures though.
    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay
    • Black bumper and the later years Z-71 style color matched grille.
    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
