Slick 50 Oil Treatment Use It Or Not?

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 2000 z71 with 75,000 miles on it and the previous owner put slick 50 in every other oil change and changed it every 6,000 mile with 5w30 mobil 1. Should I keep putting the slick 50 in or not? I plan on still using mobil 1 but changing it every 3,000. I have just never been a fan of oil treatments but guess everyone has a opinon.

I've never put oil treatments in anything I've owned , personally I think the are a waste of money! I just traded in a 96 Silverado with 148,000 , got a 02 Nissan Quest with 121,000 and a 96 Honda Civic with 240,000 and none of them use a drop of oil! Conventional oil and Wix filter every 3,000 miles!

did the previous owner do it just because, or was there a reason(i.e. an oil leak somewhere, or for reduce oil consumption)?

i had a very minor rear main seal leak in my old dakota, but it was also consuming oil. i think the piston rings were worn out. i used Lucas Oil Stabilizer every 3,000 mile oil change and it significantly reduced the leak and oil consumption.

if he was putting it in just because, i wouldn't waste your money on it. there needs to be a reason to put additives. like stopping a leak without paying a bunch for mechanical labor to fix it, if you intend on not keeping the vehicle very long or just can't afford the labor. thats how i rationalized using the additive.

Don't be sucked into buying oil additives. Only the people who make them and sell them see any benefits ($).

If you use a good oil you don't anything else.

That slick 50 would have done no good, just floated on top of the Mobil-1. Most additives won't mix in with oils now a days.

What makes you think this?

DEWFPO (doesn't use any additives of any type, just high quality oil and filters).

Slick50????? If you don't know what to do with that $10, I'll give you my address and I promise you, you will get 10% better mileage, your engine will last twice as long and you will have more HP.....

I use Mobile1 oil and Mobile1 filter. I change it @ 10K miles. I've had it analyzed twice @ 10K miles and it was just over half life. I've got 84K and don't use any oil between changes.

Lab testing. Lots and lots of lab testing. I'll get that info for you folks to read shortly but in the mean time, read this:

STAY AWAY FROM IT!!!!!! SNAKE OIL!!!!!!!

Let a freind talk me into trying it one time in my 86 S10, ended up tearing engine apart. All rings stuck to pistons. Had to pry off with screwdriver.

Engines have had nothing but oil in them since the begining and has worked for years. More so since fuel injection. It elimanated the idiots from flooring a cold engine dealing with automatic chokes.

Just my opinion.

that's why i used Lucas products. all of there stuff is petroleum based and it truely did stop my oil consumption problem. before using it, i was adding a quart of oil every 1000 miles, after using it that was no longer necessary. before using it, my "check gauges" light would come on for low oil pressure; thats when i knew there wasn't enough oil in the engine if i forgot to check the dipstick. after using it, the light never came back on. and i used it for a good 50,000 miles out of the 80,000 i put on the truck the 7 years i owned it, with oil changes every 3,000 miles.

but i would never need any of that stuff on my silverado. engines nowadays are much more advanced! my 98 dakota had mid 80s technology under the hood! dodge is always the last one to figure out how to use these technological advances!!!

used it twice and was satisfied/liked it. Can't confirm but heard it gets like jello on the bottom of the pan after a while. Used Duralube and blew two ford motors within 500 miles of introduction. Both motors went the same way. Would not use DURALUBE ever

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
