Truck Want Start

i have a 96 chevy silverado with a 5.7L Vortec V8 . The truck will turn over but will not start . the distributor is only a couple of months old and ive replaced the crank position sensor , ignition coil ,ignition control module, fuel pump and filter and thats all i can remember . i replaced the fuel pump first and the truck finally started to run and it had the right amount of fuel pressure, then i ran out of gas in my fields , which was where it was at . and ever since then it would not crank . I took it to a local mechanic who hooked it up on the computer and he said he thinks hes going to have to put a whole new fuel injection system in it which will cost about $400 . I have never heard of putting a whole 'system' in one , but i guess you can . I was just seeing if anyone could help me and give me their thoughts as to what could be wrong . Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Tripp
