Plug Boot Removal

Goodmorning,

I am trying to replace the plugs/wires on my 2004 2500HD 6.0L.

I have changed many plugs in my 60 odd years but I am having a hard time getting the old boots off. There is a metal tube over the end of the boot. Do I pull on the metal tube or the boot. I have pulled and twisted pretty hard on each and both but nothing seems to get them off.

Is there a tool I need to remove the boot from the plugs?

Hopefully someone with more recent expierence will jump in. That said, IIRC from mine the tube comes off with the wire. They might go back, tube then wire.

I found that if you twist the boot a good bit to make it turn a complete 360 and pull it helps but not always. If you do get them off without damaging the plug wire and boot when you go to put them back on use some dielectric grease to help keep them from doing the same thing for the next plug change.

There are plug wire pullers, I have seen them in Jegs and Summit but not sure if they work with our stock wires due to the metal shield.

Mine were tough to pull off as well. Give 'em a good yank and they'll come right off.

Mine were a real beatch too. I tried everything to no avail. It was about then I decided to wait till I had a new set of plug wires beside me before I went any further. I don't remember if I screwed a couple or more taking them off. But I am pretty sure I ruined one at least.

Grab a couple beers and a rag to wipe the sweat off yourself. I picked up a plug remover tool at autozone for about $10. It helped loosen mine but I ended up yanking them all off by hand in the end. Definitely have the new set ready to go before you start.

I did the plugs on my 2003 HD recently. The boots are a real pain, but come off fairly easily with a 'boot puller' tool. It's only about $7 or so, money well spent.
