This is long but please stay with me!

 

Threw a blinking CEL on the way back from vacation. Stopped shut it down and popped the hood but everything looked ok. Started it back up with a rough idle, loss of power but not bad, and a constant CEL. Drove it home and when up to speed it drove OK. Got home pulled out the scanner and pulled a P0305 misfire cyl 5.

 

Changed the cap, rotor, plugs and wires with no change. Pulled the plugs and did a compression check and found cyl #5 at 140lbs and the rest 185lbs.

 

Pulled left head found cyl # 5 exhaust valve bent. Decide to pull the other. Sent them out. Replaced the valve springs, valve seals and three exhaust valves. Pulled the upped intake off and cleaned the lower intake along with the spider. I have changed the oil every 3,000 miles or sooner. I had no sludge in the heads or cam valley. I could not believe how clean it was for 186,000 miles. My friend the machinist also could not believe it. He also stated that it had no wear to the valve guides. Valve seat on cyl # 5 was good also.

 

OK let get to the thick of it. Put it back together checking the distributor for gear wear and slop which it had none before assembly. Fired it up and now is it showing a p0300 random misfire. Checked fuel pressure and it a constant 60lbs. Changed the fuel pump at about 140,000 with a ACdelco due to fuel level gauge not reading.

 

Checked compression and have 185lbs all cyl's. Checking the plugs cyl #1 and #4 are clean and all others are black?

 

Don't no where to go from here? Can a crank sensor or cam sensor be bad and only set a P0300? Or do you think the spider is bad?

pulled the upper intake off last night and did not find any fuel from leaking. Verified by Hooking up wiring and fuel lines to spider with a pressure gauge on the fuel line and turned the key on. No leaking from meter body, regulator, or injectors. Does not tell me the poppets are good but no leaking. Also note have good vacuum checked before taking off upper intake.

How can I prove it Out? I put over 300,000 on a 1997 with a 4.3l and never had any problems like this. Also why would it have been OK before I removed the heads and now all of a sudden I need a new spider. I always add a bottle of techron every oil change.

How else can you have a fuel rich situation with good compression and good spark WITHOUT it being something in the injection side? I've seen literally hundreds of these trucks with the same issue. Just because the poppets don't leak (which in fact they rarely do) doesn't mean they aren't spraying like crap, it just means that you aren't going to have a cold fuel flooding situation during a start that's all. If you don't believe me, that's fine I mean hey I am trying to diagnose your vehicle over the internet so...... :lol:

I am leaning that way to. What I can't understand is the plugs I pulled out before the bent valve had nice clean burn. Never had any problems at all. Only after I replaced the heads and started it back up did I run into this problem. I guess stranger things can happen right? I appreciate your help Chevytech77. Thank you.

FINAL OUTCOME - Installed the updated MFI injector kit and it cured everything. Thank you Chevytech77!!! no more P0300 and the truck runs even better then it did before.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
