Trailer Rental Options?

Hey all,

I'm going to be moving in March and have looked at renting a U-Haul trailer to drag my junk along for the ride. As best I can tell they're the only ones who do one-way rentals but I'd really like to avoid using them because the two or three times I've personally used their trucks and the countless other times I've gotten suckered into helping a friend stuff one full of their crap I've never seen a truck of theirs in what I would consider good repair. They're all absolute crap with vast amounts of broken bits. I frankly don't trust them to deliver a quality trailer that I won't be constantly scared of failure with for the 1000 mile drive. Does anyone know of other companies that do one way rentals? I really can't buy one as I'll have nowhere for it in Michigan.

Not sure who else rents one way.

What about trying to find that "Great Deal" on a trailer near you, and then just sell it when you get here to MI? Even if you loose some money, may not be any worse than the rental cost.

What part of Mi are you moving to?

And welcome, it's nice to hear of someone moving TO Mi for once!

My Father in law and I used a uHaul trailer 6x12 dual axle to haul about 500 miles. It did well enough, but the first one that they were about to let us leave with had a bent front axle.

I stopped the guy from going to get the paperwork (he was ready to sign off on it), and showed him the axle, made him get on the ground and look at it. He then gave us another trailer.

Long story short, we loaded the crap out of that thing, and had the guy let us leave without me checking (be honest, most people don't check that stuff), I think we would have had a failure on the drive. The guy @ the place didn't even check tire pressures, and if there's any Uhaul apologists here, don't say that they check the pressures every morning, cause I had to add 15 lbs to a tire to get it to 5 lbs from max.

Anyways, I agree with the guy above me. This is the time to get that trailer you always wanted :)

I thought about buying a trailer and flipping it but I'll likely be moving to an apt. complex so I won't have a place to put it once I arrive. Also, my employer is financing the move so getting them to pay for the rental is a non-issue but they might have issue buying me one (contributing toward it obviously, not buying it outright). I'd definitely like to buy a decent enclosed one someday but it's not really in the cards financially right now I don't think.

Chris- I don't have a specific place for sure yet, I visited an apt. complex in Jackson I really liked but as the date gets closer I'll be looking for smaller/more rural rental properties in the areas north and west of Ann Arbor.

Mike,

AA & the surrounding area is nice. Just remember, if you end up in Hell, it does get cold enough to freeze there in the Winter too! Lol

An enclosed trailer would be sweet! Especially if you need a storage unit for some of your stuff. Just store it in the trailer at the storage lot.

Good luck on the move, and keep us posted!

Chris
