Front Hub Problems

I just talked to a parts guy at our local Chevy dealer and he tells me that they replace a lot of front hubs on Chevy trucks. Do these parts fail prematurely, and is hot humid weather responsible for earlier bearing failure? Most failures are bearing related.

Do a search about these hub bearing..."a lot" is an understatement. Both my fronts have been replaced. The first one under extended warranty, the second on my dime. Not sure about humidity, I think they were just poor quality. If your's are starting to go, get them changed as they go from "starting" to go, to "broke" in a second's notice.

No, mine ar enot going bad yet. Is it possible just to change the bearing on these hubs, or do you have to replace the whole thing?

As for Timken bearings, I always liked them and they meant good American quality to me, until I bought a set that said "Made in China". :)

Had the right side go at 80k miles and the left side go at 95k miles. 04 sierra

My parents truck both went at 65k miles. 04 silverado

Dealer charged me 540 to replace my right one. The left one I bought for 100 and installed myself in about 45 minutes.

It's an entire hub, pressed assembly. You can't change just the bearings. Typically them come with the ABS sensor already installed. Someone has a good write up on here of exactly how to do it. It's not a very difficult job providing that you can get all the hardware removed. If your's is also 4x4 just remember that you are "suppose" to replace the axle shaft hub nut after you remove it. I wasn't around for the one I had to pay to replace so I'm not sure what my wife bought as a replacement for mine. It's held up for over 6 months so far so we'll see.

There is no rhyme or reason of why they go bad, I had a grand am that lasted barely 15 or 20 thousand. My Monte made it to 90k.

they are a hit and miss thing.... had a bearing just go bad on my 2001 silver at about 95, my suburban with 170k still has good hubs/bearings
