2004 Silverado Guages Failing

I have a 2004 Silverado 1/2 ton reg cab and bed.

 

4.3L - 5 spd manual just passed 96K miles.

 

My speedometer started out acting goofy 2 yrs ago and has stopped working altogether. Having a tachometer and standard tranny I have been able to calculate my speed so that is not important.

 

My gas guage went goofy last month and it keeps going clockwise further each time I start the truck up. I always check my fuel economy and w/26 gal tank I can safely go 400 miles before running out.

 

My question is: Are all my guages going to start going bad? It seems Chevy bought some cheap instraments.

PS: I must be one of the few who drive the V6 4.3L, mainly because I don't have the $$$ for the nicer equipped trucks!

Do a search for stepper motor replacement. The tachometer on my cluster just bit the dust last week.

I see I would have to remove the cluster and ship it out for repairs. I don't know how to remove the cluster and it would be difficult to drive with no guages until it came back also.

 

I'll have to see if someone local to me can help out.

It's not difficult to drive without the cluster, especially if you have a GPS for speed

I shipped mine on a Thursday and had it back on Monday. I used my GPS for those few days and rode the motorcycle too

We have a 2004 Tahoe and I seem to remember GM sending out a notice that if this happened to certain 2004 vehicles they would replace the assembly withing 7 years or a certain number of miles (or something like that). Need to go find the letter for clarification.

7 years or 70k miles from the original in-service date. Whichever comes first.

Well since I know how to use soldering iron and I'm too poor to have someone else do it, I'll probably buy some "stepper motors" and replace the bad ones and hope I don't have the "power supply" problem that was referenced in the links.

 

I'll probably tackle this in a couple of weeks when I have the time.
