Trouble At The Pump

I have a 2011 Silverado 1500, when ever i try and fill up at the gas station the nossle never gets a good seal and stops on my. i find myself holding the handle everytime i fill up. anyone else have this problem/solution?

Ya know, I test drove a white truck before I bought my black one and tried to put gas in it.

 

I ended up with gas everywhere trying to get the pump to work so I would be able to set lock and walk away while it pumped.

 

It kept shutting off. I repositioned the pump I don't know how many times and never could get gas in that truck without physically holding the pump a certain way.

 

The black truck I have now, no problem. I filled it up without any issues at all.

 

I thought I was going crazy. Been pumping gas for 25 years and never had this issue.

never had an issue on any gmt-800 or gmt-900 I have owned.

It may not be an issue for long anyway. Congress has been trying to push through federal legislation banning the auto-shut-off at the gas pumps anyway.

 

I thought that CA had passed State legislation against it last year. I'm not quite sure what happened there but all of the pumps that I use still have it.

I bought my truck used and it has done that ever since I got it. Called the dealer to get it fixed since it is certified, and they said a bad vent valve in the tank. We will see when i drop it off I guess.

Here is seems like the "new" gas stations have broken them off the nozzles. Most still have them though.

My 04 Sierra has done this since day 1. It is the biggest pain in the ass to fill up in the world

I have an 04 avalanche that does the same thing except mine is only in the winter time. Huge pain to fill up.

In my 2010 the only way i can get it to pump until full is to pull down the boot on the gas nozzle (There is a crease/fold in the ones around here that allows the boot to extend/retract depending on the size and angle of the filler tube) and hold it tight up against the plastic around the filler neck, otherwise it never gets a good seal. I'm in the northeast and they've taken all of the auto-stop locks off the pumps around here, so i have to hold it anyway, but its still irritating when you have to resume pumping when it automatically shuts off at less than a full tank.

my 2009, 2010, and now my 2011 does it. I've found some it's at most stations. But i found one near my house that it works just fine at. It's a pain if i fill up at a different one though. The trick i found is the bottom hangs to low so if you lift it up on the bottom and hold it in place it will pump just fine. But yeah it's super annoying.

I had this happen a few times in an '09 I sometimes drive. It only happened occasionally at one gas station and I could never determine exactly what was causing it. However, the station has gotten new pumps and have not had a problem since.

Not every state requires the nozzle with the fume recovery boot. The boot is part of a system designed to return gas fumes back to the tanks. If the nozzle doesn't sit properly in the hole in the filler neck and the boot doesn't seal properly, that will cause the pump handle to shut off.

 

Fortunately, I don't have that problem around here as the boot is not a requirement. The bad part is driving into Oregon where you can't pump your own gas. So if an attendant is busy with other cars and the pump shuts off while the gas tank is not full, you have to wait for the attendant to come back and start the pumping again.
