Good News for Me and My Silverado

Someone told me if I got handicap plates on my truck that I could get the weight fee waived and save me a couple hundred bucks.

Of course I live in California, where they think everyone is rich and can pay enormous DMV fees.

Well, we refinanced the truck and got it put into both me and my wife's name since she is the handicapped one, and got the handicap plates several months ago.

I was waiting for the new registration renewal in the mail, and I picked up the mail today and it was there.

Last year I paid................Hold on to your chair............$564.00.

This year it is only................$262.00.

Since the original registration fee was based on a $36,000.00 sale price, and when we refinanced, the selling price, or price that was refinanced was only about $18,000.00 we cut our license fee by 50%, which saved us $148.00 and then the $154 weight fee was taken off.

So me and my wife, are happy......Happy.....HAPPY!

Please forgive my ignorance, but what in the heck is a "weight fee"?

In California, a weight fee is what they charge trucks based on the amount of weight the truck can haul. I guess it boils down to the bigger the trucks, the more damage they do to the roads so they charge this weight fee supposedly to use it to help repair the roads. You can get an exemption from the weight fee if you are handicapped since they figure you wouldn't be using it for work. Every truck even small trucks have to pay a weight fee. It has been going on for over 30 years that I know of. Can't tell you when it started. My 83 GMC S-15 had a weight fee of around $12.00 a year. You can also get the exemption if you have a camper shell, however if you are caught hauling anything in the truck, the fine is pretty steep.

It amazes me how much registration fees seem to vary across the country. Makes me glad for good old Tarheelia. A 6000 lbs tag runs $51 here, the annual inspection is $13.50. At least in this respect nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina.....

Glad you got the fees chopped.

I agree greywolf...for the most part...im a carolina boy too, but....when i was stationed in Arkansas i paid $4.75 anually for tags for each car b/c i was an out of state tax payer(still a NC resident)...it was wonderful no inspections at all....i get stationed back here in NC, buy my truck...$281 for plates, havent even done the inspection yet...yea it hurts the ole' wallet when ur used to throwing out a 5$ and getting change. Heard rumor NC is most likely doing away with the inspections all together..hmm??

Here in Florida they doubled vehicle registration fees about 2 years ago. It costs now about $ 85 for a truck registration renewal. Initial registration/new tag fees for cars and trucks are outrageous: $ 450.

When you compare vehicle registration fees, you must include the vehicle excise tax. It has been my experience that eastern states (I have lived in Massachusetts and Virginia) that registration fees are a standard fee for all vehicles, but then the state or county bills each vehicle owner an additional fee each year, the excise tax. In western states (I have lived in California and now live in Arizona) there is no separate excise tax, it's built into the registration fee. So, when looking at registration fees, it's important to add the state excise tax, if applicable, into the equation.

You're right in NC you pay county property tax based on the assessed value of the vehicle once per year. As the vehicle ages the tax decreases as its value decreases. Our county rate currently is around 40 cents per hundred value. So it is an extra expense. Still less than what the OP had in California.

I'm not too worried about Registration fees....it's the Personal Property Tax every year.....$23.50 per $1,000 of value....granted, every year it goes down, but it never goes away.....once it hits, I think 25 years old, it starts going back up because it's now a "Classic"

MN doesn't have yearly inspections and a ten year old vehicle is 42.50. I think I paid 100 for my 04 avalanche in August.

Just this year, I paid $350 in Personal Property Tax for the 2006 Silverado.......we were looking at a new truck, but the yearly Property Tax killed that idea....the first year would have been close to $1,000 in Property Tax

I'm with you on that. I never owned a new vehicle in my life and then I bought my truck and wife's car within a few months of one another. We paid the MA state tax. 4 Months later....baboom.....fork over another $1900...$1600 the next year......brutal scumbags. By the end of the vehicles life I'll have paid in the neigborhood of $6k-$7k in taxes. I had a used Jeep for years that was $42/year. I'll never buy a new car in that state again.
