factory installed remote start

I am picking up my new truck tomorrow. I know a little about the remote start that I read in a denali owners manual that I found online.

I would like to know. How do I transition from starting the truck with the remote to getting into the truck and driving away?

Unlock the doors, put the key in, and turn to run. Once it is in the run position it is ready to drive. Also, if you turn it all the way to start by accident it wont do anything and if you don't put the key in a hit the brake, it will shut off.

thanks, I figured it would be about like that but didn't want to experiment on my my ride.

Great news on the new truck. I would recommend putting the owners manual in the toilet for a month or so. There is so much info in there you would be amazed.

On my truck, the only way to shut off the truck running is to hit the hazard lights. Accidentally hitting the brake pedal when you climb in will not shut the engine off. Hazard lights or pushing the start button again, or it timing out will shut it off.

If you remote started your truck, hitting the brakes should shut it off unless they accidentaly tapped into the hazard wire instead of the brake switch? Can you remote start it then drive away?

Nope, the brake thing is for aftermarket starters. Factory starters are now killed from the hazard lights.

Huh cool, learn something new every day.

When I read this I thought you were crazy (my apologies). I went out and tried the remote start on my truck and now I think GM is crazy. What is the point of having the engine turn off with the hazard lights? If someone happens to get into your vehicle, the first thing they will do is step on the brake to try to switch it into gear. This makes no sense.

If the vehicle is unlocked without the fob ie, someone reaches in the window and unlocks the door, does the engine shut off?

I am fairly certain that if the alarm is triggered the truck will shut off. The reason that GM doesn't make the truck shut off with the brake is because this remote start system is different than the aftermarket ones. The aftermarket ones turn everything on just like the key does. this means that the vehicle could be operated without a failsafe like the kill switch wired to the brake.

However GMs system doesn't provide power to anything in the cab except controlling the HVAC in certain situations and the heated seats and the window defroster. none of the lights even come on inside the cab. This makes it so someone is not able to just drive the truck away.

interesting... I am not sure what your set up is but I do not have the digital controls. I know the heat comes on to what I have it set to when I turn it off last but do you know if the defroster comes on automatically or does that need to be set when the truck it turned off as well.

The only thing that I do not care for with the factory remote start is the fact that in my model you have to set everything up before you shut off the vehicle. I always forget to do this. I guess an aftermarket one wouldn't help with that issue either. The other thing is the run time. I thought 15 minutes was a lot of time but it turns out that it is not that much time after all.

Rear defroster and heated mirrors come on automatically when the temp outside is below.......well, cant remember.

yep, on my last dodge ram with factory remote start hitting the brakes before inserting the key would kill the truck. But with my chevy I can stomp on the brake all I want and it won't shut off. I like this way better because when I hop in the first thing I do is put my foot on the brake. I don't know how many times i've attempted to put it in gear with the keys still in my pocket but luckily it won't let you. Another great feature is if it is hot or cold out, it will kick the HVAC on for you to an appropriate setting. In the dodge trucks you had to remember to set the heat/air on full blast the night before, before locking up for the night. The only thing I don't like about the GM one is the range. You have to be pretty close for it to work whereas the dodge would work from a loooong way away.

If you reach in a window and open the locked door from the inside after locking the doors with the remote, the alarm goes off. I am assuming that if the vehicle was remote started that it would turn off too. Why don't you see what it does?

And GM moved the remote turn off to the hazards because the first thing everyone does when they get in is put their foot on the brake. This keeps all of us from having to restart the truck. You can't put it into gear because the key is not in and on, and even if you managed to get it into gear the theftlock would kill the engine.
