darn afm, i wanna kick it in the teeth

i made a post a while back asking people why they didnt like it. my trucks afm wouldnt come on till around 40ish mph, so any city driving i was doing it was stay in v8 mode. i was fine with that. and when it transitioned on the hiway or service roads it was seemless. well, recently the s.o.b started to come in while in the city, as slow as 20 mph. and its annoying, it takes a second and a small input of throttle to kick it back into v8 mode, so i just keep her in 4th gear, but now i officially see why you guys hate this thing, mines finally started to act up and i hate it. emailing my tuner tonight to see if he can get rid of it

oh man i know. and i thought this truck with the 6 spd and the afm was gonna get better gas mileage than my 06 did, it doesnt, in fact i think its worse. i think for the extra 5 miles you may be able to drive on a tank of gas from the afm working on the hiway its not worth having

shuts off 4. makes the truck a v4. problem is when it engages at 20 mph, im cruising at 1000 rpm, its engaged, and it takes a second to kick back into v8, its not seamless like it is on the hiway

my tuner just got back to me, he can disable the afm at any speeds i want, so i asked him to change my tune to have the afm stay off until 50 mph. figure its fine ont he hiway, i just cant stand it in the city :D

No issues here in our Tahoe

How many miles do you have.

Another thought if you turn on the radio and just drive do you really notice it?

42000 or so. it just started doing it maybe 1000 miles ago. the oll life indicator is saying 45%, maybe ill swap out whatever the dealer gave me for some synthetic and see if it changes anything. i notice it mostly while driving down a road, through a school zone for example, theres one in my sub division, and it goes throuigh there in 5th at 1000 rpm in v4 mode and hen i give it a bit of gas theres that hesitation to kick it over and i feel it. and now that i feel it i know its there and i just seem to look for it

I dunno whats going on with this AFM thing. My 2011-5.3 has 10,000 miles on it. It's seamless, doesn't come on at 20mph. It works (thus far anyway) exactly like it's designed to do. If you assume all (5.3) motors are the same, and you assume that the software is exactly the same that controls this function and the transmission (and everything else as needed) then why do these trucks behave differently for some verses others?

I just don't get it.

Not calling anyone a liar here - just don't understand it.

i was in your same situation 1000 miles ago. in fact i defended the damn afm in my post because mine wouldnt come on till just over city speed limits and its just recently it started to act up. mine was seemless, and still is on the hiway, but its coming on really early and not transitioning very smoothly.

so far in 3000 miles ive noticed the truck has used 1/4 of a liter of oil, if it gets worse ill have it turned off completely

If it's consuming oil, TURN IT OFF!!! The 0.5 MPGs you MIGHT be saving are not worth the troubles you will have when you start fouling plugs and plugging catalytic converters.

Or, have your dealer perform the TSB that adds a oil mist deflector.

good to know thanks bud, ill email my tuner now and ask him to turn it off all together and do the plugs when i do the oil in the truck just to get a clean start

What we need is a FACTORY ORDER and a software program to turn the AFM off at the Dealer at the owners request. My concern with an aftermarket tune is apparantly the computer does record a "change event". You can turn the tune off before taking it to the dealer but if they dig deep enough they will know the truck was modified.
