I totally forgot to take any before pictures. But after installing this thing, who wants to remember life before it :D

Install went fantastic. The only thing left is to kink out the factory backup camera integration. (Not working but almost positive it's a user error) Installed in about an hour. If I had to install another one tomorrow, i could do it in less than half that time. Very impressed with the sound quality. Makes the stock speakers sound 100 times better. I have a very low ringing in the front speakers that can only be heard when the system is turned down all the way. Again I am sure it is user error. Probably have some RCA's touching behind the HU. I am going to get back in there tomorrow and fix it. I will also take some pictures, have not had the chance tonight. Been playing to much.

Good to see you got the unit OK and that the install was as promised (easy)...

 

Did you follow these steps when you installed it?:

  • Hit the system reset (press-hold until it reboots) first - this allows the unit to recognize what vehicle it's in and configure itself

     

  • Turn on the Bose amp mode - Setup>Info>Press-hold the "th" in Bluetooth until the amp menu comes up - choose factory amp "On"

     

 

The Pacific NW got brutalized by snow & ice storm - gonna be awhile cleaning up this mess (after it floods and we get 50mph winds this weekend) :(

Any luck getting the buzzing noise fixed yet? I see there is another thread with someone else having that problem and if this is a widespread issue might make me rethink my decision to get one.

All Fixed!!! The two problems were linked. The low buzz was coming from the speakers because I had the backup camera hooked up to the wrong wires. Apparently, in 2009 models... the rear passenger window wire is blue also. :D I disconnected the wires from the wire tap and the sound went away.

 

Everything is in and working perfectly except for the backup camera. I am going to do a little bit more research before clipping into any more wires. I also ordered some T Taps that Walt suggested. They seem to work way better that the wire taps I bought.

 

Here are a few picks of the install. So far.... Loving this thing!!! I am going to take some time in the next few days and write a review about the whole thing. There were some things in other reviews I wish were talked about so i am going to try and focus on the stuff not already said.

That looks great!! Thanks for the update and the pictures. Looking forward to hearing your full review. Gonna be very impatient for Walt to return my call now. Darn mother nature. :)

Mine will be here Monday but my install is in an LT non Bose. I'm very excited for the install!

 

 

If iI can ever get internet service back, I'll be uploading the installation video for the LT truck soon. We haven't had anything other than really lousy Verizon wireless 1X internet coverage since Wednesday. Can't upload any video at all right now, but as soon as we're back online, it will be the first priority.

Got the OGM-1 back in November with no issues. Just need to get a back-up camera, but that will come later.

I am running into an issue trying to find the correct wires to tap into. In Walt's tutorial pictures, it shows a blue and a white wire. I have an 09 Avalanche so I was hoping that it would be the same but I do not think so. I connected to what i thought was the correct wires and it ended up being the passenger rear window. I go that fixed now but am a little concerned on tapping any more wires until I know it is correct. Can anyone help with this? Once this is completed, I can do my full review.

Mine is on the way also! Going into a truck with a big stereo system and an aftermarket flip-down dvd player so we shall see how it integrates.

So decided not to hold off on my review because of the backup cam. This is something that does not affect the review on the unit because it is an issue with me, not the OGM-1. I will review on what I know about the OGM-1 so far. I am by no means a professional reviewer, but here it is...

 

 

I can not tell you enough how much this unit rocks. I drove around all weekend and have found that the layout of everything is very smooth and makes it very easy to navigate through the menu's allowing you to keep your eyes on the road. One of the things I like the most about this unit is that it has physical buttons as well as a touch screen. Too many nav/dvd units I looked at had very little, if any real buttons or knobs and you had to rely on the touch screen for everything. This unit does a great job of balancing the two (physical and touchscreen buttons). The look of this thing is phenomenal. You would think that this was part of the truck from the factory. And not only does it look factory, but it feels factory too. Everything integrates with the steering wheel and rear controls.

DISC

The unit will automatically detect whether the disc is a DVD or CD. I have a MP3 player hooked up to the unit so no need to put MP3's on a disc. Played a CD and sounded just as you would expect a CD to sound. If it has metadata for the songs it will display it. The DVD playback looks great. I like the onscreen controls also. To pull them up, all you do is tap on the screen as the movie is playing and they appear. Then you either touch the screen again, or wait a few seconds and they go away. You can also control them from the main disc screen, which also gives you an option to view the movie in 4:3, 16:9, or full screen on the unit. I did find the volume on the unit to be lower while playing a movie compared to anything else on the unit. In comparison, a comfortable level while listening to the stereo is about 28-32 on the volume. When watching a DVD, it is closer to 40-42. This is not that big of a deal, but would be nice to know if this is something others experience as well. The OGM-1 will blank out the video option if not in park, but will keep the video playing in any other screen you may have hooked up to it. There is a way to put the unit into "test mode" which allows you to play the video on the OGM-1 screen while not in park, but that of course is not recommended. :rolleyes:

Radio

The radio works fine, I do not have a whole lot to say about it because I have a XM subscription and never really listen to the local radio stations, but I did tune into a few local stations and they sounded crystal clear.

 

XM Radio

If you have an XM subscription, this unit really shines. Being able to see a channel guide really helps with all of the channels. I have had my subscription for over 3 years and still have no idea what 90% of the channel names are. Now, I can easily scan through the channel and see there names at the same time. Also something that I like is that when using the upper right hand knob to change the stations, it does not change the station immediately. The screen will show the stations as they change but there is a delay on when the unit actually tunes in. I love this because if I am trying to manually tune to a station real quick, I can start turning the knob and make sure I land on the correct channel, before it actually changes the station. This might be a bug to some, but is a feature in my eyes.

iPod

I am going to be getting a 160GB iPod classic soon so that I can fit all of my music in it and have room to be able to have a few movies on it as well. I tested the unit out with my old 5th Gen iPod and loved the integration. Had about 40GB worth of songs and the unit was able to load the metadata quickly when searching by song, title, artist, or genre. Sound quality was great as well.

Rear LCD

I do not have any other screens yet so I am not able to comment on this, but looks very simple once the screens are connected to the unit. There is a button on the main menu that allows you to be able to turn on and control the external screen from the head unit.

 

Navigation

I found the navigation to be nice. I have not gone on any trips just yet so I have only put in routes that I knew were I was going as a test. I do like the feature of the nav chiming in on whatever else you are doing (watching movie, listening to music) to let you know your turn is coming up. I found it annoying while in town because it chimes in every couple minutes, but for long road trips would be very helpful if you are on a 2-300 mile stretch. I also have not played with the navigation to much because I am anxiously waiting for the iGo Primo update. (Any day now I hope)

 

 

AV IN

I have not used this yet, but plan on seeing if I can get a RCA to 3.5mm connection and hook up a WD TV Live to it so that I an have a large hard drive filled with AVI's to watch while on the road. i will update this when I get a chance to try that out.

 

 

USB

Have not used this either because of having the iPod hooked up. I would like to see some additional video codec's in the future. That would allow me to put a bunch of video files on a hard drive and be able to play them though the usb. That way I would not need an external device like the WD TV Live and be able to control the media from the HU. (This would be huge, I have all of my movies backed up onto hard drive and would allow me to have all of my movies on long trips)

 

Bluetooth

I have used this quite a bit and unless people are lying to me, I am coming in loud and clear during phone conversations. I used the sticky back clip that came with the microphone (there were a few optional clips that came with it) and placed it right over the rear view mirror. I like this spot because I can still swivel the microphone from one side to the other depending on if I get a call or my wife. The Bluetooth streaming comes in handy also. I use it mainly to stream Pandora from my phone. When streaming music from this feature, it only gives you the option to control the music. It does not show any metadata on the screen, but does allow you to control the tracks. The sound comes in very clear. i am sure there is a bit of sound loss from streaming, but i would bet that most people would not be able to tell.

I am sure I have missed some stuff because there are so many cool things about this unit. I am going to be patient on the factory backup camera integration until I know for sure what wire to splice into. Good job on the review! Looks like a great unit. Just placed my order today for the OGM-1 and a set of headrest monitors from Rosen. Can't wait til they get here.

      I have the same running boards on my truck and I do agree they are bulky. I also find myself stepping over them when getting in and out of the truck. Besides providing protection to the rocker panels, they aren't very useful.  I will be replacing them soon with the Amp Powersteps.

      Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.

      Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.

      apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
