Wire out of 3rd brake light?

Has any one used the 3rd brakelight to run wires? I was thinking about installing a cb ant on the roof and going to use thw 3rd brake to get the wire in the cab

I've seen it done with older model trucks, just remember you might need to put some kind of sealant around openings.

Yes you can. I ran the wires for my blue light out the 3rd brake light. I notched the plastic housing with a die grinder and then siliconed around the wiring really good.

I did this with my last truck (2000 Tacoma) for a CB antenna (Wilson 1000 magnetic mount). I notched it and sealed with black RTV to match the factory rubber seal. Didn't leak in the 6 years I had the truck after doing the mod, but check it periodically to make sure the sealant isn't failing.

You guys still use CBs? :dunno:

Not sure of the purpose for the OP, but I got it when I was a member of a hunt club. The CB's work at a longer range than the handhelds do for communicating in a rural/hilly area.

I have run some wires for my amber plowing lights through the third brake light. I didn't notch the light or anything, but my wires are much smaller than an antenna. However, I have had it installed for two years without any problems leaking or wires chaffing.

It's still the best way to keep up on traffic situations and potential speed traps on the highway. You'd be surprised how many people have CB radios in their cars and trucks. Every big rig tractor-trailer has one too.

It's also simply smart to have one whether you plan to use it or not. Any "prepper" will tell you that in a long-term SHTF situation you want to (at the very least) make sure you have seeds, ammo, a way to get or make clean water, and communication capability.
