changing gvwr on title to put duals on 1/2 ton truck

does anyone know how big i can go on tires for a stock suspension for my jimmy. im using 31" cooper discover's right know but i would like to go bigger if i dont go dual.

I know duels wont give you better traction for a truck . In winter duelyies are horrible to much of a wide stance and not enough weight . Its like a pair of skies on the back of your truck with dulie wheels. What you need to stop flats is a better ply tire not the paper thin ones you get stock from a dealer ship . Get a tire with some rubber on the walls .

Oh yes it is . wider tire you have the more slippy it is . Reasearch winter tires and the narrow ones get better ratings for grip in snow. and every duley I have driven in winter is vary slippery compared to a single wheel. There great when there locked up with the heavy desiel egine in the front .

Also those duel wheels in the pack get packed with snow in the winter . Duelies are great for more payload but on mud and snow or ice they are horrable . (experince parents have two dulely trucks grew up driving them )

PROS:

 

  • A flat on the rear, unless you're fully loaded, means you can usually still drive it someplace to get it fixed
  • A flat on the front can, in an emergency, be swapped with a rear to get you someplace it can be fixed. Great if you don't have room to carry a spare, but you'll need at least one jack stand to swap them.
  • Higher weight rating

 

CONS:

 

  • Having to buy 6 tires instead of four
  • Lowered gas mileage due to more rolling resistance
  • Wider body line can make parking difficult
  • Lowered ground pressure (per wheel) can make them prone to skidding and sliding if lightly loaded or empty
  • Deep offset on the rims makes carrying a spare difficult
  • Checking tire pressure and adding air to inner tires can be a PITA (unless you have extended valve stems and the right air chuck)
  • Flats on the inner wheels can go unnoticed unless you make a habit of checking them. (Use a "thumper" to whack 'em)
  • Snow, mud and ice can get caught between the rear wheels, throwing of the balance, but is fairly easy to clean out.
  • Limited choices when it comes to tire sizes due to required clearance between rear tires

This will not give you more traction on slippery or loose surface like gravel. Your weight on your back tires will be lighter becuase it will be distributed on 4 tires instead of two in the back so your back wheels tend to slip more and slide around more in bad road conditions. and flats even on a duely you will not want to go far with. You should not be getting flat tires so easy . What ply tires are you running? So basicaly the reason you want it are invalid. BUT I am curious as to what it would look like when your done. I dont know the laws but will it even be road legal ?

A friend of mine that drives semie trucks . When you dont have a trailer there really slippery in rain or snow/mud . A semie is like a duely truck works the same concept. Not much weight in the back like most trucks and with a duely its even worse becuase of all of that little weigth you have is distrubuted even more with those tires. You will float instead of grip in to solid ground.

right now im running 31x10.50r15 on the truck. im not to sure of the ply as their cooper tires from a local shop, probly standerd ply for road use. i get flats on all my vehicles because i think people just drop stuff in the road around town, when i get them fixed its always a nail they pull out.

It's STILL running and I've never been inside the engine, aside for the timing cover since it was leaking, so I threw a new timing set in since that makes sense. Transmission is ORIGINAL. Electric pump in the gas tank is ORIGINAL. Rear end is ORIGINAL. I'd have to hit my head REAL hard to want to pay $60k or more for a car that still can't come close to the comfort, seating and storage space, or reliability of this one. Nothing is even in the ball park! Hundreds of thousands of brands and models have been built and sent to the crusher while this one keeps on going!   https://postimg.cc/Z9XRrCSg   I've got a whole fleet of cars, motorcycles, and a truck close to this age for summer and winter. No one could pay me enough to buy anything built this century. I have zero use for any it.
    • Since I'm the one who has to fix them when they break, I'll take vehicles over 30 years old all day, EVERY day, over ANY modern crap. Have you attempted any repairs on anything built after 2006? It's a friggin nightmare, and gets worse the newer the model year.    If I had the will or desire, I can make any car of any age outside of a Model T (I don't have THAT much will ...) just as powerful, comfortable, and have all the tech the new stuff does, and get pretty close in mileage, too. I prefer SIMPLICITY. The less the vehicle has, the less to fix WHEN it breaks, not IF.   I'm glad you snot-nosed punks don't like them. More for us, plus that keeps the prices from climbing more than they already have.👍
    • Bringing this thread back on topic. I just noticed the incredible lack of bright chrome across the entire new lineup. Even the Denali has tinted the brightwork in the grille and has none elsewhere. None of them have chrome bumpers. As far as I can tell there aren't even chrome mirror caps. I'm curious if this also happens out back? Are there no chrome rear bumpers either? This is quite the departure for GMC.
