does anybody know if i have to change the gvwr on my title to put duals on my 1500 jimmy. i want to leave the springs as they are. i want the duals for traction and spare tires, as i get a lot of flats on a tire every now and then.

I don't see why you can't bolt on some fender flares and then add your dual rear wheels. Without changing other things like rear springs you cant haul anymore so really your gvwr wouldn't go up.... Plus as long as it's not crazy looking who'd know. It's a 1998, nobody remembers what they are supposed to look like. :)

Yeah, why worry about changing the titel info?

Just bolt on some duals and leave it alone.

i have heard that some states want you to change the gvwr or something to change the rear end setup. i read something somewhere where a guy had a 3500 single wheel and wanted duals on it and he was told he could get ticketed if he didn't change the gvwr. i wouldn't think a set of tires would change that much but was wondering what others thought or heard about that.

Ok, where did you hear this? Was your state one of the "some states"? Not to be an ass but to have dual rear wheels to "have spares" is kind of dumb to me. Why not throw 2 spares in the bed? Your not going to get much more traction as the weight of the rear is now spread out to 4 tires and not 2. Dual rear wheels are more for increasing loading capacity I believe. So for the purposes mentioned I think you are overthinking this project. I would like to see a completed pic if you go with it though.

They also add lateral stability when hauling heavy loads.

no i dont think kansas was one but im not sure what the dot and state requires for vehicles, never gave it much thought. i m thinkin id have a little better traction cause in a way id have a wider footprint, in a way. as for spares im always haven to fix a tire; just 3 weeks ago i had one id have to air every other day or id be flat: i dont have a spare right now; and with the duals if one does go flat i can run a while on the other one. im also thinking of a flatbed on it, but i dont know yet.

I also think its a whole lot of work just for spares and extra traction, but im not knocking your idea..

Would love to see it done

Why not just add an(add a leaf)/ helper spring kit for load. and good offroad/allterrain tires for traction..

Your not going to want to drive with a flat even if you have dual rear wheels. The flat tire will eat itself up in a hurry. It could do damage to your truck. My work truck had one of the dual rear wheels go flat and I had no choice but to drive it back to the shop (less than 20 miles) and the tire was all chewed up and it was about to fling the tread. I'd still be curious to see how it looks, so post up some pics if you go ahead.

You won't need to change GVWR. You will need to add dual spacers on back(and front if you wanna put dual rims up there too), in addition to flares, amber and red clearance lights on them, and a rear red triple light(since it will be over 80 inches wide with duals). Honestly, I see no advantage unless you're pulling with a bed hitch and you put on heavier springs. Get used to paying 50% more for tires, since you gotta replace 2 more. You would get a little more traction, but not enough to make it worth it. And it won't help with flats, sorry.

why would the gvwr change? thats rated from the factory- just because you add more tires doesnt mean you have increased payloads (if anything your payload capacity would decrease with the added weight of the additional wheels and tires), your gvwr would remain the same.

if anything i think that would be illegal in some form? your title can say whatever gvwr you want- but in the end your still exceeding the factory ratings.
