Black Bear Auto Cal for my 2011 5.3 LT

Hello,

I am new member...been reading a lot of the posts. Thanks for all the good info!

I live out in Eastern LI NY, and I am looking for the best tune for my 2011 Silverado 5.3 LT w/ Z71 pack. The performance tune forum pretty much points straight to a Black Bear tune, with preference to an in person custom tune. Is the AutoCal tune (via email) still a good option for custom tune since I am not near an "in person" set up with Black Bear?

I am also thinking about K&N CAI and an exhaust (Magnaflow or Borla, maybe Corsa). I think I read in some of the forums that the stock air intake is pretty good and the stock pipes and cats are already high flow and well tuned, just swap the muffler. I will probably first just start with the tune. Please chime in with feed back and suggestions. :D

Being that you are new and under warranty still I would definitely do the Autocal. Only way to go in my opinion, and you dont have to wait for a local tune meet for an in person  The autocal logs data so he does the tune with the characteristics of YOUR engine and transmission.

As far as CAI and exhaust..... CAI is not going to give you any performance unless you're going to heavily mod the motor, the stock air box is already good. For exhaust, the main reason people change nowadays is for sound, it also has decent flow from factory

Well...... if you go with the Autocal, you can tune now, and then get a new tune file sent for when you get a charger at no extra cost

What ever you do don't get a Diablo inTune. If you need a custom tune some of their distributors, if not most, don't know how to tune or have never tuned a vehicle like yours so you end up not only paying for the Diablo tuner but additional for tunes from other sources. That can lead to quite an expensive tune. Diablo sells to anybody that buys their product whether they can tune or not. Definitely not the tuner to buy IMO.

I have a DisbloSport InTune and it works great, no custom tune just using the presets. Also never had any trouble wit hthe Predator. A custom tune from then isn't what you think, it can be done through email just like the autocal. You don't NEED to go to a distributor to have a custom tune done, that is BS.

I'm glad you had good luck from Diablo. I did not with the new inTune! Did you actually measure the power from your tune? Or are you using your "seat of the pants" dyno? Regardless, I measured a loss of power from the inTune. Maybe Diablo just doesn't have the newer trucks figured out yet. Nor some of their distributors.

If the distributor that a person buys from doesn't know how to tune the vehicle then your only option is buy a tune elsewhere or return the thing. I choose the latter.

And of course you can get tunes via email. What was the rude BS for?

Justin will be out in the NY area in March for a wedding, he may be able to squeeze you in for a tune while he is there. But like the others said, I would still go with the AutoCal (we offer a discount for customers who already have a tune) after you get your inperson tune (so you can switch back to stock as well as perform updates when you add mods).

If you are interested in setting up a time with him, shoot an email to [email protected].

I got the Diablosport Intune on my chevy and I love it, I have the option to custom tune or return to stock whenever, but I also just use the settings already presented. Anyone with a little common sense and ther abilitly to use a cell phone can tuen there own truck and save hundreds. The days when shops tuned your truck for you is long gone and not ideal at all.

Have you measured power gains?

You love it because it's easy to use? Love from ease of use is not a very good indicator of a tuner!

    • Enjoy the new truck, it’s a beauty. I’m glad you’re keeping the OBS, I love those old trucks.
    • With large equipment or deep mud it is more of a use the higher gear to avoid spinning tires, getting stuck because of spinning tires and doing damage to your machine. The idea is if you run out of torque before you spin tires you can still downshift for more torque. If you are just spinning your tires in the lowest available gear you are stuck and things break.   Automatic transmissions, traction control and electronic transfer cases change the calculation a little as you the driver have less control over each piece.
    • are there any codes? with lots of rust, perhaps disconnect/clean both sides of the connection/examine cable ends (the wires) for corrosion going into the sheath & replace if necessary/reconnect ALL the power AND ground cables between the battery, engine, frame, cab, fuse box and starter charm.li (website) has a no-start diagnostic procedure you can work through to get it working.
    • Its no wonder you've gravitated to the oil types and brands you have in later years after trying certain brands and one being a specialty oil or at least very hard to come by up here and the other would have been a commonly found oil of the era and the vastly different outcomes as a result to using the vehicles in question the same distance for an OCI . It shows what marketing hype can do without actually having the product to back up the claims and that is no different now with the insane claims that are written on the side of a bottle of oil from some of the off the shelf oils.    What has surprised me and I was already finding this out before I bought my truck with the GDI engine, that this newer fancy technology that seemingly would suggest better fuel economy/emissions with this high pressure spray of fuel is not in reality kind at all to the engine or at least the oils life. Yet they insist on claiming long OCI with this technology just like they did with the port or similar type fuel injection systems when in reality its a step back in oil life to have a GDI system.    I think the mistake your making Grumpy is that your not sending your samples to Blackstone and getting the feel good glowing report that you can run it another 1000 or more miles and then send another sample where they say run it yet another 1000 miles and on and on it goes until your sending in something that looks a lot like road tar and then they may suggest you change your oil within the next 1000 miles 😆
    • I am guessing that engines of that design back then had a better ability to be abused and survive longer than a new design engine with the long timing chain and the overhead cams and phasers etc. But I would never guess that an engine could go that far and not fail spectacularly or at least die a slow death.
