Driving from NC to Alaska!

Recommended Posts

Ive got military orders to go from North Carolina to Kodiak Alaska. Not leaving til June so Im starting to put together a to-do list for the truck. Right now its got 47k miles on it. Im taking it in this week to get the brake fluid changed, tires rotated and balanced, alignment and tire sensors put back in my stock wheels.

Ive already changed gear oil, transfer case, transmission to amsoil. Anybody got any other parts or things they would check or change? I will probably have them look at the bushings, tie rod ends. Not sure if you can tell how much wear is on wheel bearings.

Another thing is I have a blackbear tune that calls for 93 octane so I was thinking of getting that changed unless I can get away with running 87 octane for the trip. Its going to end up being over 5000 miles. So if anybody has any suggestions or advice Id appreciate it. Thanks!

Sounds like you've got it covered. You can easily run 89 octane in a 93 tune without issue. If your that worried, have Justin drop the tune to 89 tune.

I know it may sound early, but I'd make sure your dexcool is in top shape. Maybe a 50% change/swap just to make sure it's mostly clean and fresh. Belts are another thing to look at. Quite frankly, I wouldn't worry to much... Your driving one of the best vehicles on the road

Having been to Alaska, there are places where you won't likely find anything above 87. That trip will be closer to 9k miles than 5k.

Kodiak isn't going to be as cold as the interior or the outter reaches but it would be nice to have a block heater installed if you don't alreaady have one.

Maybe some Canadian currency since most of the drive is going to be in Canada and a fresh set of under where lol .

Unlike alot of the States we actually accept their money ! Haha made that mistake trying to drive through Chicago tolls with Canadian $$$ :smash:

Other than that though, I am sure the truck would be fine just the way it is for that trip. Like Steven said though I would give those belts a check or at least have a spare!

the route you are going to take will most certainly go thru Alberta, from Montana up hwy 4 to 3 to 2 north up to Edmonton,or bypass(secondary hwy 19 west to 60 north thru Devon) to 16A west for a bit then 43(fill up on hwy 16A in Spruce Grove )north all the way to Grand Praire, west to Dawson creek BC and away you go north on 97 past Fort St John up to Fort nelson then i have no clue after that !!!!!

follow it on google maps ,easy ......Calgary is fun lol,

Thanks for the info. I'll look into the coolant and belt. I will be towing a 7x14 enclosed trailer with some toys so I'm sure thats gonna kill the gas mileage.

As far as the tranny goes, I have only dropped the pan once and refilled with the 5 quarts that it loses and did the filter so I might do that again just to get more fresh fluid in there. Cant wait for this trip should be fun

We were trying to figure out our route this past weekend... gotta make a stop in Michigan and Minnesota so probably just head to Montana from there and up towards Edmonton and keep going northwest! I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions once I really sit down and look at a map. What do you mean by twinned?

Govt will ship all your household goods. Plus they will pay for the weight of the stuff that I carry in the vehicle and something like 40 cents a mile. There is other stuff like dislocation allowance and per diem so I'm not exactly sure what they give me but we should be covered for the move.

One other fluid you might want to change out and that is the power steering fluid. You can change it out to synthetic and it will help with the colder temps up there as well as the extreme heat you might be getting into driving there from here in NC. What base in NC are you stationed at?
