4.8l or 5.3l?

I have a 2008 Sierra Ext. Cab 4x4 with the 4.8L. I live at Ft. Irwin in the southern California mountains. I towed my buddies 25ft camper with no problem, could barely notice I was towing it. As far as MPG goes, there isn't a big difference, I can squeeze 20mpg if I'm only doing 70 with no head wind on the freeway.

I just bought an 09 Silverado, and I purposely searched for the 5.3. But, I have the crew cab, 4x4 and I do tow from time to time. I felt that the extra weight of the truck and the 4x4 and towing probably would need the 5.3. However, I know a lot of folks that are really happy with the 4.8. I sold a pontoon boat last summer to a guy that has the 2wd regular cab and a 4.8. He tows the boat hundreds of miles at a time and never has an issue. There will probably be times you wish you had the 5.3, and I am sure there will be times that I wish I had the 6.0, but overall you should be a-ok with the 4.8
