Adding OEM remote engine start to my 2009 Suburban

I have recently purchased a 2009 Suburban. I checked with my local GM dealer to determine if it was "remote engine start ready" by giving them the VIN. It was determinded that it was remote start ready and quoted a price of $200 for the "kit". What is involved with installing the "kit"? I have googled about it and found many postings saying that all that is involved is that a software update is pushed to the on board computers and new key fobs are programmed to operate the function. What is really done to activate it and how much should it really cost? I was quoted $360 for the kit and installation by two different dealerships. I found the key fobs on eBay for $16 apiece.

Thanks

It's not just a keyfob. You need the module, keyfob, and programming.

Don't buy the parts from the dealer, we can get it to you much cheaper.

We only deal in GM OEM parts.

Does the $200 include the programming?

My dealer quoted me $299 for the fobs and programming. $200 sounds like a pretty decent price if that is for everything.

I would be weary of the eBay fobs. I know my oem fobs came with a code that the dealership required to perform the programming.

Depending on your RPO codes, you do only need the remotes and dealer programming. Before buying from anywhere other than your dealer, I'd ask the dealer what they charge to program if you buy your own equipment.

Well then what did you mean when you said, "It was determinded that it was remote start ready and quoted a price of $200 for the "kit"?

When installing the GMAccessories remote start kit, the dealer must phone GM techline and get some code from them. The GM techline charges the dealer for this service, I seem to recall it is either $50 or $100 for this. Not sure what kit you are using, but the one installed in mine included a hood latch with a hood open switch on it, and an extended range antenna.

It's RPO code AP8 (check the glove box) that you need to look for. If you have it, you just need the kit that has fobs and a code that a gm tech calls in and programs truck. No need to go looking for a module (and I have no idea where it's located either).
