2004 2500 HD With 8.1 Starting Problem

I have a 2004 2500 Hd 4X4 with a 8.1 and Allison with 81,000 miles on it. I put new batteries (aux. battery option)1 month ago. Since then the truck has failed to start twice now. I try to start is and it just clicks and after the 5th or 6th time trying to start it turns over and starts. I have had the batteries checked and they are fine. All connections are clean and tight. I took it to the dealer still under the (GMPP) and it would not repeat the problem for them. So they said there was nothing that they could do. It acts like a starter solenoid but the dearler said they have almost no problems with the starters. I would think if the ign. switch was bad it would not click. Any ideas?

I would venture to say the starter is beginning to fail. Just because the dealer tells you they have not experienced starter issues does not mean there isn't a problem. You may have the only 8.1 starter out there that is failing. All starters fail eventually. Just my two cents.

Generally the ign switch will not click. It is probably the starter. You could run a wire with alligator clips to the small wire on the solenoid, tuck it safely under the hood near the battery, making sure it won't contact metal, and when it clicks, hit the end to the positive post. It will probably still click. If so it's the starter. This will eliminate everything but the batteries, cables, and the starter.
