6 in superlift with welded shocks!

My brother-in-law bought a 2006 Silverado Ext Cab with a 6 inch superlift. Upon inspection, post-purchase, he realized the front shocks are welded to the superlift lower shock bracket. The bracket has holes in it for the shock to bolt to, so why did they weld it? Any help is appreciated, I have no prior experience with lift kits.

No pics as he is 250 miles away, and I am going on his word. Where I am from you can take a person for their word, until they prove otherwise and he hasn't. To anybody else that may be able to help me out, he called the shop that installed the lift and they stated that they welded it "upon customer request".

Sounds like your brother-in-law just bought a truck that was beat to death and he most likely broke shock bolts before is to why he wanted them welded on this truck. If he had them welded then there is most likely more hack jobs.

This really makes no sense, it is a dual shock kit? If it is a single shock the bottom of the shock is welded to the lower control arm not anything to do with the lift kit and you'd just replace those and the shocks to remedy the problem, $300ish for lower control arms and $200ish in shocks

The thing is it has a bracket mounted where the factory shock fits to the A-arm and the bracket has the holes to mount the bottom of the shock. But instead of just putting a bolt through the bracket they apparently welded the shock to a flat place on the bracket. I am thinking maybe they used to short of a shock and instead of using the right shock they just extended it as far as possible and welded it. And it is not a dual shock setup. Thanks for the input!

Sounds like he bought a death trap. I have been involved in the 4x4 world since I was a kid. I have seen this done a lot (never on newer trucks) on old beaters for trail riding. The reason this is done is because guys that beat the snot out of their trucks off road either bend or break the shock bolts. The weld is there so there is no bolt to break.....My advise would be to cut the welds and reinstall the shocks properly.

Have him check the rear shocks, chances are they will be the same way. Also check and see if the superlift rear lift blocks are welded. Very good chance that the entire suspension is rigged up like the front shock mounts.

Thanks for the info, I will take a look at it the next time he comes home!
