EVAP Service ???

I always take my truck in for an oil change, for $29.95, it is cheap.

 

So they have written under the section: Additional Recommended Services....

 

EVAP Service.

 

So I asked them what that was and they said I need to have the Air Conditioner condensor cleaned, and that runs $119.95. They said it should be done every couple of years.

 

I only have 16,000 miles of city and freeway driving on the truck, do you think I should do this, or can I do it myself?

I've got 110K on my truck and the A/C condenser has never been cleaned and it blows as cold today as it did when I purchased the truck in 02.

My uneducated guess would be hell no you don't need that. Are you having any issues with the AC? I've never done any sort of maintenance on a perfectly good ac system.

Sounds like crap to me. If you need to clean your condensor just use the garden hose and gently spray from under the hood. I've got six years and 95k miles with 0 problems.

pretty sure the manual says you dont need to touch the ac until something like 150k miles.

Sadly, having been in auto service, both dealership and aftermarket for years, i,m all too familiar with "menu" practices. Since the days of "wheel bearing repack" and full tuneups, belt changes and alternator brushes have long gone the way of the "Dodo" bird, shops are constantly looking for ways to pay the bills. The "Menus" that are presented not only pass by so called "automotive experts" for approval, but usually to the firms legal teams as well, to make ,to insure there is "some" plausable shred of legitamacy to the Service. Ac services, fuel injection cleaning (even when GM.s Multek injecectors had internal windings and GM admantly said "NO CLEANING"} In the days of low tech, sticking to the owners manuals was perhaps a sure fire recipe for early demise of a vehicle. Today, i,d advocate "if it,s not in there, dont buy it. Shops will continue to try selling "services", they have to to survive, but education and some time spent reading owners manuals are a consumers best defense. (BTW...i find it ironic i still have to point out to some shops,,yes,,,there ARE grease fittings under there,,please dont advertise "lube oil filter" if your not goint to grease the truck. Anyway, I,m rambling,...Leave a perfectly working AC system alone!..lol

we had an additive program at our little store ,the brand was Forte'

 

i guy get sold this for an oil change and it has oil ,fuel,a couple other additives in this package ,,,buddy comes in to pick up his truck and the advisor said "that'll be $150. please"

 

after the customer lost his shit and saw the DP ,that was the end of the forte crap lol
