Upgraded to 6.6 Duri

Had to upgrade from an 08 5.3 1500 to the 2012 duramax for my 5000 mile military transfer!! Drove about 1000 miles with the 1500 and stopped to trade it in along the way.

Anyway now that i have the diesel just wondering anything to look out for or what people like/dislike about it. I've never had a diesel before but I am so impressed!! I have always used amsoil but I think I am going use mobile 1 so there is no question if a warranty issue comes up.

Its got about 4000 miles on it now from the trip so i am going to change the oil but anybody think I should do the tranny fluid, fuel filter or anything else?

Thanks!!

Congrats on your new ride and thanks for your service. I've never owned a diesel, so can't comment on your questions. What kind of mpgs are you seeing?

If it's brand new I wouldn't change any fluids/filter until it's recommended time, other than oil of course. Just my opinion.

Congratulations on your purchse! I would have to agree that your best bet would be to follow the recommended maintenance schedule as outlined in your owner's manual. Let me know if you have any additional questions. Thank you.

Remember, it doesn't take the same oil as a gas burner. It needs a CJ4 rated oil. Which are typically either 5w40 syn, or 15w40 dino.

Change the extrenal trans filter when you get you first oil change. You dont have to change the trans oil just the filter and you only have to do it on the first oil change to get any particals from break in it may have caught.

I was towing about 8k all the way from michigan to alaska and mpg varied from 13-14 in flat lands and 10-11 through the mountains. My 1500 towing that much was getting 8-9 mpg. Just putting around without towing any weight its in the high teens.

I will probably just do the oil and maybe the trans filter. Anybody know if Mobil 1 is the only fully synthetic DEXOS approved oil?

The Duramax does't get Dexos. It gets as mentioned above a 15W40 or 5W40 synthetic CJ4 rated oil. Standard Mobil 1 is not the correct oil.

Congrats on the new truck.....you're gonna love that Duramax. :)

it is funny that you traded your truck in the middle of a long trip. However I bet you will arrive so much more rested because the truck and you will work less.

So I can put any brand of CJ4 rated oil in it?

I do love this thing... favorite things so far being exhaust brake, built in brake controller, and of course the heated/cooled seats!

I'll put some pics up when I can.. still living in a hotel waiting on govt housing. not fun.
