Corvette Servo Install Troubles

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, how's it going. I've got an issue I need some suggestions on.

I took my stock servo out Friday night and was going to throw a Vette servo in. I didn't have any issues getting the old one out or putting the new one back together...until the last step.

My issue is that I can't compress the assembly enough. I need another 1/4" to 1/2" of compression to expose the groove so I can install the snap ring. Prying on it isn't sufficient because its moving either my exhaust or my transmission, depending on where I pry.

I've already taken it apart and reassembled it multiple times, so I don't think there's an issue with the assembly itself, but who knows. Have you guys that have done a Vette servo installed the cover snap ring by compressing the assembly with a crow bar?

Sorry for the long read...I'm just trying to be thorough because I need my truck ASAP. Thanks guys.

It's been a few years since I installed mine but if I remember correctly, it took quite a bit of prying to get it in. I don't remember if I had to twist or rotate the servo to get it lined up or not.

I don't think that the o ring is catching on anything, but I'm not 100% sure. I can't see too much, but the cover spins freely when not compressed.

If there's something to line up, I haven't done it. I didn't see anything that looked like it needed to be in a certain position, so I just put it in.

I've put a TON of pressure on the cover, and how it sits it's just not happening with a crowbar. I can only compress the servo assy. so far and then the force from prying either starts to move my transmission or my exhaust. I've even tried rigging up a death trap by hooking a ratchet strap up to my crowbar (lol) while it's on the cover, and it just starts to move my exhaust.

I'm trying to find a small puller so I can place direct pressure on the cover, but since everyone else has done it with a crowbar and I was able to remove my stock servo, it kinda worries me.

Did you follow the instructions in this thread or something similar?

Sounds like the same trouble I had. However, I was also adding the 4th hold servo, which has a wider cap than the original. Heck, I was even using a come-along and a chain to compress it, and it wouldn't!

What I discovered was happening with mine was that my pry bar was only touching one edge (say at 12:00) instead of the middle of the cap. That caused a very slight, undetectable tilt, not allowing the servo to compress.

Once I adjusted the point of contact (with a 6" piece of 2x4, as I recall), the servo compressed beautifully.

Lesson: try to make the pry bar mash on the center of the outside cap. Hope this makes sense.

That thread is pretty scary! :o

Thankfully, I haven't started my truck or because I know ugly would, at the very least, blow a bunch of my fluid out. I doubt I've damaged anything since I haven't ran it (crossing my fingers). I guess I'll just have to talk to the trans guy at work tomorrow and see what he thinks. Maybe just usingthe GM servo cover compressor tool would solve my issue, it just seems like I shouldn't have to be putting the kind of pressure on it I am, still to no avail.

Brainpause, I made a small block and tried it quickly (it's about bedtime), but no dice. Might try it again, but it's compressing to the point it was before and stopping, but we'll see.

Oldschool, how should I make sure the pin is lined up? I can't see much of anything up in there. The pin hanging up sounds like something that could be causing it, because my servo assy. will compress to a certain extent, then won't compress any further.

Thanks for the help, guys. I appreciate it.

I'm out of ideas. I've made sure the pin is lined up, pushing evenly on the cap, everything is put together correctly as per the GMFS thread, the O-ring isn't catching on anything...everything I can think of. And nothing. Still won't compress enough. I'm about to reach my last bit of patients. :nonod: I sure don't want to take it to a shop, and in the last few years I've never had to...but I'm out of ideas.

i just finished putting in the corvette servo and 4th apply and cover. You have to push really hard but it seems like you already did that. Try taking a second pry bar and prying on the sides of the cover while still putting pressure on the middle. I also ended up pushing it in and sliding it back out and pushing it back in, had to work it back and forth a little. I eventually got it in but took a lot of pressure and a second set of hands helps A LOT to get the snap ring on .

Yep, stock pin. I'm not sure what the issue is. With the servo assy. out of the truck, it compresses as it should. Once you put it in, it doesn't. I'm still messing with it, but I'm not sure why it won't compress as it should in the truck. The worst part is I know it's going to be something stupid and simple causing this!
