Corvette Servo Install Troubles

Here's what I'm working with.

 

Piece number one (first to install into transmission).

Everything compresses fine until I put the cover on. Until then, I can get compression out of the little spring under the e-clip on the pin AND the bigger spring that slides over the pin at the very beginning of the assembly.

 

After I put the cover on, I can't get any compression out of the spring under the e-clip because the cover is hitting the piece with the ridges (in the middle, normally comes with a red o-ring) and isn't allowing the spring under the e-clip to compress. So when it's in the truck, I'm just squashing the cover against the aforementioned piece, and obviously it's not doing me any good. What's going on here?

Good pictures, but it has been too long for me to remember whether those are right.

 

As I said before, mine would compress up to a point, just like yours. I still think that it is ever so slightly crooked.

 

Do you also put a little transmission fluid around the edges as you try to slide it in? That might help.

Man, I've sure been trying to get everything in straight. Everything is soaked in ATF, and I've tried putting everything in without the O-rings to make sure nothing is hanging up. I've been messing with this damn servo for half a week, so I'd sure hope I would have gotten it straight at least one, but who knows. Using a wood block results in the same thing. Everything feels fine until I put the cover itself on...

 

I guess I need to know whether or not I need the spring under the e-clip to compress in order for the assy. to go in? As of right now, the only compression I'm getting is from the bigger spring this slides over the pin right where the pin goes into the bore.

Thank God, some hope for gettting this thing going! By inner housing, I assume you mean the one with the red O-ring? Even flipped around, the cover still hits on the piece with the red O-ring so I can't compress the smaller spring.

 

Thanks txab, you're a lifesaver if you can help me get this thing up and running again! Feel free to throw out everything that's wrong, I obviously need all the help I can get.

Also make sure you've got the 4th apply piston installed correctly

 

 

Did you look closely at the pics in the "how to" thread and compare to your assembly? Your pic doesn't match

All I'm seeing is the piece with the red O-ring was flipped around. Do you see anything else?

 

As for the fourth apply piston, I have it sitting on top of the e-clip with the raised portion facing outwards towards the inside of the assy. cover. I can take as many pictures as I need to, so let me know if you'd like any more.

All i can see wrong is the inner housing(red o ring) is flipped. When you put it in do you stick the spring in first? Thats how i did mine. then slide the pin with the corvette servo and inner housing on it. Next the 4th apply piston with the more raised part sticking into the cover. The Blue o ring gets hung up a little on the snap ring groove you have to really push hard. Heres all the stuff i used when i installed mine i also did the 4th apply piston and cover though.

EDIT: you got the small black spring installed against the corvette servo then the washer and the e clip in the groove its supposed to be in? The big spring that goes in the corvette servo went in ok and compresses and the snap ring is in all the way? just throwing stuff out there.

Ya the corvette servo firms up the shifts, makes them quicker. the 4 apply piston that i got holds the bands 40% tighter( better for towing) and improves the 4-3 shift

Well, got it figured out...kinda. The good news is that its none of my fault. The bad news is that its going to end up costing me a lot of money.

 

The bottom line is that I wasn't doing anything wrong. The assembly was put together correctly and all that good stuff. The tabs that the band has on it broke. I took it to a trans shop (I need the truck by mid August and work full time so I had no choice.). After having the same problem I was having, they dropped the trans. Found the broken band, f***ed clutch drum that the 2-4 band acts on, smoked 3-4 clutch, etc. I knew the trans needed rebuilt, but I was trying to limp it along until I got out of school. Oh well, nothing you can do.

 

The whole trans is going to be rebuilt. Details coming soon, but it'll be a beast. And to top it off, I'm going to look at an LQ9 tomorrow. :D This smoked trans might be a blessing in disguise. Only time will tell!

Will a TCM tune do the same thing or not quite?

Yes...TCM tune does the same thing....firms up shift. I have the corvette servo and had to back the settings on the tcm firm shift back to -18 on the 1-2 shift. Would snap my neck with the canned firm shift tune. Probably going back with the stock servo now that Intune is updated with TCM support.

    • Are you going to take long trips in it?  If so, try out the seats in the various trims. For me the lower trim level seats were not comfortable. 
    • I have a 2016 that I bought new and still own. I'm around 129,000 miles now. The biggest problem was a transmission failure about 2 years ago around 95000 miles. No warning, just failed while driving down a back road. A reman GM transmission installed and it's been fine ever since. A few other minor problems along the way. I am in no hurry to replace it. It's been paid off long ago and do plan on driving this as long as I can.   I will admit I am leery about all the additional electronics in the newer models and feel that it is just more potential problems. I think there's actually more than I would have wanted in this 2016 but so far so good. I think even if something major like lifter failure happened, it would still be cheaper to at worst, drop a new engine in than buy a new vehicle.
