Door Handle Broke-Need Help

Okay so the spring mechanism on my exterior door handle assmbly broke. Got the replacement and put it on and reconnected everything...or so I thought. There is a rod witha odd shapped metal piece at the top of the door inside. It connects to the door handle but only by a small plastic nail/harpoon shaped retainer. It still rotates freely which I found odd, so i tried opening the door from the outside and it has the spring tension as it should but it does not open. Any ideas?

is the rod that goes to the door catch hooked up ? the rod pushes into the plastic clip on the door handle then attaches another plastic clip on the catch.

the handle will have spring tension on it even if its not hooked up to the catch because of the spring on the handle

It's this thing that concerns me. Looks like it should hook to somewhere.

it sounds like you don't have the rod connected to the handle properly. I am not familiar with the GMT900 inards (I am familiar with the GMT800s), but your best bet is to pull the door panel on the opposite side and use it for a reference.

I went and looked it over and figured it out. I had connected the original metal connecting piece (circled) to the new metal piece. Essentially I had to connection points when I should have had just one.

 

Removed the original and connected the new and all good now. Makes ya feel stupid but uts Friday so I feel like celebrating.
