OGM1/iGo Primo "Altitude" fix & "Accept" override

One of the things that has been bugging me since the OGM1 was introduced was the lack of "real-time" altitude display, so I finally pushed for a solution with Advent.

They passed it along to iGo, and after about a week of working on it, they fixed it!

Here's what you have to add to your "sys.txt" file on the micro SD card (if you already have entries under the [gps] or [folders] sections, add these additional lines to those sections):

[gps]

set_messages=0

send_init=0

[folders]

sdcardpath="SDMEM"

Also, if you want to override the "Accept" requirement on your navi, add this (again, adding just the additional lines if you already have the section headers present):

[debug]

skip_eula="1"

[interface]

drive_carefully="0"

I noticed the other day that the altitude was working on my setup. This started after I got an update from Naviextras Toolbox. Have not checked to see if they modified the sys.txt file as part of the update.

It's kinda frustrating that we have to call out things that IMO should be working from day one, but this is another example of being able to have input that actually produces results.

In terms of responsiveness to our input, Advent is hands-down the BEST I've ever experienced in 37 years as an installer. We wouldn't have a prayer if we gave this type of feedback to Pioneer, JVC or Kenwood - in fact, we don't even have a point of contact for any of these guys for technical issues at all!

I have the techs @ Advent's number on speed dial...

Thanks Walt. I did the fixes yesterday and it's now showing altitude correctly. I had given up on ever seeing the correct altitude after getting a reply from Advent's technical service saying that it would never work.

Now that you've spoiled us by getting rid of the "ACCEPT" requirement, any chance we could get one more line of code to get the map to show automatically instead of having to press "SHOW Map".

Thanks Walt, I just did got rid of the drive safe / accept. Worked great! Next thing they could do is get the map to auto boot in the background after a few seconds....that would be very convenient! I'm very happy with it, other then my rear seat control issue; which I am working on with the engineers. Keep up the good work harassing the Advent people....seems to be a good formula to get things done: we harass you, you harass them, and it gets done!

Here's the problem with booting up the navi in the background: I've tried it on my own deck and AT LEAST 50% of the time, it crashes the deck because it runs out of RAM on bootup. If you consider the steps that occur during the bootup process, you'll understand that RAM is at a premium, and anything that steals any more jeopardizes the whole process.

Here's what happens on bootup:

Since the vehicle considers the OGM1 another computer in the LAN that all the other computers communicate with, it has to boot up when the key turns on, and report to the LAN, get a "handshake", report "good" once it's done, then report any warnings that would normally pass through the deck (like the chimes you get when the key turns on)
It has to boot up it's own internal operating system (Windows CE 6.0 or thereabouts)
Display the splash screen
Handshake with the XM module
Re-index your iPod/iPhone if plugged in
Re-index USB if plugged in
Re-pair with Bluetooth if paired
Report rear camera if in reverse
Process and play rear factory parking sensor warnings and display warning icons on-screen if in reverse
Get done with all of that, then play your source.

After all this is done, in the background we're asking it to unzip multiple zipped files and load the operating system for the navi (the progress bar that you see when you turn on the navi system), as well as establish GPS communication and then display your maps in whatever mode you've chosen - and BTW, just the 3D map file for the USA is over 300MB.

Of course, all of this is not all-inclusive of the processes at work here, but representative of the multitude of things that you'll never see going on inside the box every time you turn the key on.

So with all of this going on, memory management is hugely important, and depending on what you're asking the deck to do, booting up the navi in the background may give you no problems if you never use Bluetooth or iPod/iPhone/USB, or it may blow up every time if you use all the above. But I don't think the guys at Advent want to start troubleshooting hundreds of systems for guys that have changed their decks to a configuration that Advent specifically warns us not to use, and I don't either.

From what I've been told, this is not just a line of code, but is part of a compiled file or files that may have multiple impacts on other parts of the display. So I guess their thinking is that the cost/benefit ratio is not quite there in terms of the potential problems they'll cause vs. the benefit of moving that warning box. They did drop the opacity of the warning box to the point that I can easily see my hitch through it - can't you see yours?

Just poking my neck in here to get in on this thread.

Hey Walt, this is Steve from OKC! I'm still telling the story of our conversation of car audio history in the NW and how small the installer world is. Checked on the top 100 installers and sure enough... I saw a name that left me, let's just say speechless. I love it!

Anyways glad to catch you on this thread as my unit has been working flawlessly and these 2 issues you speak of here were my next to address.

The question I have is, with this anti-nag program, do I still need to press the 'Nav' button after I start my vehicle before it will start the boot process? My guess from your reply to being able to boot straight to the map, is yes. If so, is there a way to program the nav to perform a delayed auto boot so as to not crash the system? I don't hit the nav button right away or sometimes ever on my drives. But the times when I do need the map up on screen (usually mid commute) it takes a long time to boot. So I was hoping an auto delayed boot in the background would be a possibility.

I hope I make sense here.

Yeah, so just reading my previous post and I see where I don't make sense.

So here is an effort to clarify what I am really trying to ask lol.

Is there a way to program the unit to auto boot the navigation at vehicle start up? Even if it was a delayed auto boot and not necessarily to the nav screen that would be fine by me. An auto boot or delayed auto boot coupled with the anti-nag screen program will allow me mid commute to hit the nav button and get the map up on the screen on demand. As of now in the case of needing the map mid-commute requires a wait period that seems forever at freeway speeds.
