I don't want to sound stupid but I know its how you learn.

 

Is it a bad or good idea to use high heat clear coat on already metallic/ceramic coated headers to help maintain the original coating

I'd contact the company who ceramic coated them. I had an exhaust system for one of my toys ceramic coated by Jet-Hot and I know it's not cheap. I wouldn't chance it without talking to them.
