Steering Wheel Squeak

Recommended Posts

My truck has a rubber boot where the steering shaft goes through the firewall. Every time I have to make a sharp turn, that boot squeaks. Is there supposed to be some sort of grease in there to prevent that? Can I just use wheel bearing grease to stop it, or does it need to be something different?

If you scroll towards the bottom, top middle picture, it is the boot on the upper right.

I did try Silicon spray. Not much success, but a little. That's why I thought grease, but I'm not sure of the rubber and some rubbers don't do well with grease, but some are OK.

They do make a silicone grease that will stay in place. It plays well with rubber. One place to find it is in the plumbing dept. of a hardware store. It comes in a small container, about the size of a 50 cent piece. About 1/2" thick maybe.
