Transfer case shift control knob LED colors

I couldn't find any info on this in my truck's PDF manual (or any 4x4 info, for that matter), so I was hoping someone knew here.

 

What does the LED color mean on the outer "ring" of the transfer case shift control knob? I know the orange "dots" in the middle of it shows which mode is selected, but the outer color is green when on 2 wheel drive or Auto, but orange on 4 Hi and 4 Lo. Does orange mean something is wrong and 4 wheel drive is not on?

Not sure what you are seeing there. Mine doesn't change colors anywhere. The lite behind the selector ring is the same as all the other dash lites i believe. What model year?

2008 GMC Sierra.. I'll look again tomorrow, but this morning I swear I saw green and orange, but maybe I was just tired.

My 2007 did the same thing. Never had a problem with it and I put 100,000 miles on the truck.

At start-up mine goes through a self check and flashes red then goes to the normal color (amber). If it's dark outside the outer ring has a small white light that lights up otherwise it's off during the day.
