How-To: Fix Sticky Door Locks GMT800.

Over the last few years the doors on my 2000 sierra have been getting harder and harder to lock and unlock. Started off having to turn the key as hard as I could to lock and unlock them. Then it got to where the power door lock switches inside the truck would not move the locks at all. Finally it got to where I had to just leave the truck unlocked all the time. Well after breaking a key I decided to find the culprit. I started by greasing the lock hinge on the outside of the doors and spraying pb blaster inside the key holes to no avail. I could turn the keys now but the locks wouldn't work. I then pulled the door panels off and found the problem. The rod that moves back and forth to engage the locks was covered in grit and grime as well as the plastic guides for them:ny3u2eje.jpg

I used simple green, hot water, a rag, and a pocket knife to clean all the buildup off the rod and guides then applied a light coating of grease. Now my locks on both doors work like new.

Hope y'all find this write up helpful seeing as finally having locks again is a blessing for me.

Thanks been having this problem to the point mine doesn't electrically lock been meaning to take care of this soon. Since we are on it do you know what to do about doors that don't shut easy I was thinking I should degrease and then re-grease the latches.

Also people may want to pay attention to the bend in the rod where it connects to the plastic lock slider. If that isn't straight it will bind.

That and:

I would check the door pins then I would adjust the (striker?) the latch closes on.

^ this. If your door isn't shutting well usually the door pins/striker are to blame.

My 2000 Silverado has the same problem. I am going to do this when I change my blown speakers. Thanks for the write up!
